Heheheheehh .. Bet that raised an Eyebrow or two :D

I've been made an offer that I can't refuse.

I was sent an e-mail from an old friend in the UK that will "Give Me", yep for Free, no dosh, not one pence, nadda !!! an Enterprise Blade Server Backplane fully populated with redundant PSU's & NIC Control Boards (from a Teir-1 Server MFG) if I buy 2 or more Blades to go in it. When the rack is fully populated, it will house 8 Full Height Dual Quad Blades = 64 Cores  (Hello 5400 Series Processing Power) all in a neat and tidy package. Best part is, my IT director has agreed (After a bit of Arm Twisting, as he still owes me a Global CRM Implementation) to let me use one of our data centers to house the thing in. No More Power Costs, Blazing Fast - Redundant INET (100mb+), KVM-IP access, built in Web-Server for Ganglia Monitoring and the Best part, NO NOISE or HEAT problems !!!! etc etc etc :p

So, without further delay, I will be planning to shift my farm from Desktop Flding to Enterprise Blade Servers. ~ ETC end of FEB-08

So that's all well and good you say, but what does that mean for "me" and why is this lunatic posting this here ... well that means I'm going to be parting out my current farm to generate a bit of spare cash to buy Blades, the same farm that's generating a modest 12K to 14K AVE PPD now. Will be keeping one fully loaded system and offloading the the rest of the farm.

I'd rather offer it up to OcUK team members, rather than just blasting it out on E-Bay or somewhere like that.

So, keep an eye on the OcUK Members Market in the comming weeks. I need to get the T&C's of selling worked out, as I don’t want to violate any rules.

To give you an Idea of what's on Hand:
5x XEON CPU's
2x Q6600's
2x E6600's
1x X6800
Loads of RAM
HD-PSU's
Late Generation MB's
At Least 4 1900 Seris ATI Cards
3x Antec 900 Cases
2x Bookshelf, Fully Setup, Ready To Fold Linux-64bit Systems (E6600's)
etc etc etc.

[EDIT]
As Mr. Berserker Pointed Out. Please Dont Make Offers Here. When the time Comes, I will post in OcUK MM.
[/EDIT

And Yes Mr. Berserker, I have been clinically diagnosed as being dyslexic Re: EXON - XEON .. or was that a flashback to all the $$ I lost on their stock !! :D

I haven't got a clue what you are talking about in the first part but it sounds good :)

same here - first part was way over my head but soudns good!

What's the expected PPD with the new setup or have you no idea yet?
PPD - Dont know entirely, as it depends on the set up. But a Single Quad clocked to 3.0Ghz, in Linux-SMP, should produce about 2.5K to 3K PPD.

So a conservitive est. would be 16 x 2750 or 40,000 to 44,000 PPD which equates to roughly 1,200,000. Points Per Month.

Wow, that's awesome :) I've seen these servers in action on enterprise applications and they are damn fast. Nice one mate :)

I was looking at getting a new computer in March with a similar setup to Pneumonic here ^. So anything such as:

A Q6600
appropriate RAM
Mobo (what type are they? P35 or X38?)
PSU depending on type
Antec 900 case (though not decided on whether I want the P182 :P)

I would certainly be interested in :) I'm looking for a generic machine that I would use for games as well, so the gfx cards would need to be a bit more fancy :P

EDIT: It says that I can't get to the Member's Market, is there a reason for this? Do I need to have posted a certain number of times? :P I get this message:

Yeggstry, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

EXON? I think you might mean Xeon there, unless the petrochemical industry has some secret pact with Intel. :p

Putting my ex-Don hat on for a moment, please keep the offers to MM. This is not the place to be making offers for hardware, prices stated or not.

i believe it's 250 post or so and maybe a certain length of time since registering as well to stop people spamming etc just to get the 250 posts

This thread makes it so tempting to fold on our new blade server at work (16x 2.6GHz quad core zeons). My boss is on holiday for 3 weeks next month so I'll be left in charge of the IT department :) It's running vmware esx server and I could clone 8 linux folding machines in a matter of minutes.

Do it! :D

Side question: You can clone vmware images? So if I setup a linux image with SMP in the future I can just clone it and use both images at the same time for folding? :)

Correct - yes you can. VMWare will ask to give each clone a unique ID. You might have some fun with LAN configuration too but it's all doable.

Cool :) That saves a lot of hassle. I would imagine that you can setup samba easily enough on it as well (was reading the thread about using F@HMon with the VMWare images earlier :P).

When I cloned my VMware Workstation version (may be different on the esx etc etc) .. I had to set the Networking to NAT v.s. bridged., I dont know the reasoning behind it, but it worked after that.

Also, you'll want to change the Hostname's of each clone and make sure you clear the WU & machine ID's before starting the service daemon. I'd suspect the config's could remain the same though.

I demand nekkid cruncher pr0n!

Here's a little to keep you going :p

On the floor is Marge (E6600). Up above is Millhouse (Q6600). The toothbrush is to hold the X1900XT Crossfire level as the weight makes it lean precariously. The red handled object next to Millhouse is the start button :D

Nice one KE1HA.
Might be interested in some of your stuff if the timing of the sale is right.

I've been speccing a Q6600 rig up for the end of the month so I'll put that on hold till I see your prices :) I'd rather the money go towards a folding/gaming rig for me and a folding rig on the other end too!

Don't forget to post here when they're in the market! :p
