The previous Windows SMP beta client expires at the beginning of October. I have posted an updated client at the same location, accessible from the download page. This one is good until the beginning of February.

There are no major updates in this client. We are working hard on a new and improved Windows SMP client to fix a number of the problems with the current one, but we don't have an ETA yet. We'll announce that one when it's ready.

No need to download and re-install the whole thing - all you need is the updated fah.exe which is available here:

Be careful how you save the file--it's a tgz, but for some reason IE wants to save it as a tar instead (haven't tested with Firefox). If you force the extension to tgz and then open with Winzip or similar, it should deal appropriately.

Firefox downloads fine apparently :)

Why are they distributing a Windows client as a .tgz?

Surely .rar or good ole fashioned .zip would be more logical...

Yeah does seem a bit silly but there you go - guess we can just go with the stock answer of "it's a beta" which covers everything :p

Then again why does IE try to mess with it? ;)

Stock answer is "because it is IE"

And in this case that answer would be correct in every sense. Confounded by it's own stupidity.

In answer to the tgz question, the most probably reason is that Peter (Kasson) quickly tarred it on his Linux (or Mac) workstation, rather than trapesing round the office looking for a Windows box to do it on.

...or the sceptics out there are saying it must mean Stanford don't want Windows SMP crunchers any more  :p

Yeah alrighty then, just a slight fan of conspiracy theories? :D

fah.exe is in use when the client is running so you'll have to stop the client first - probably best to wait till a good time (early in a WU) as you have a few days till it expires anyway

Of course, it helps if you remember to copy it to your F@H folder, instead of wondering why your client has packed up at 92%!!

Oops!!
