What is it please?

I would just like to hear down-to-earth answers, heard it thrown around these forums a few times, thought i'd start a thread on it :)

Cheers guys :)

Theres a forum on here dedicated to distributed computing, what folding @ home is part of.
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=39

There is a lot more information about it on there website
http://folding.stanford.edu/

It is a distributed Computing project, a bit like the SETI project a few years ago.
As far as i can make out folding at home project is about understanding how proteins fold i.e. how biological molecules assemble themselves into a functional state. With this understanding of folding and mis-folding it is hoped that scientist will be able to find out what the development of many diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, BSE (mad cow disease), cancer, Huntington's Disease. This will hopefully allow scientists to come up with a cure for said diseases.
The primary contributors to the Folding@home project are many hundreds of thousands of personal computer users who have installed a small client program. The client will, at the user's choice, run in the background, utilizing otherwise unused CPU power, or run as a screensaver only while the user is away. In most modern personal computers, the CPU is rarely used to its full capacity at all times; the Folding@home client takes advantage of this unused processing power.
Not that down to earth but I hope it gives you some idea without confusing the situation.
