F1 2010 - God I truly hate Codemasters...

Took me literally 2 minutes before I was playing the game. Even got my save game back.

Here's how I do it.

Start up F1 2010 for the first time, put in username and password, enter CD-key, fine. GFWL then retreats and lets me load the game.

Not my experience I'm afraid... Repeated downloads from Microsoft... Repeated requests to restart game... Repeated links to create accounts at non-existant URLs, at sites talking about XBox's?

Glad your installation went so smoothly, but mine was a mess!

ps: When it's asking for the Microsoft logon, there was seemingly no way to exit the game (even though it was asking you to do this), other than to go through loads of menus and intro videos. Logic would suggest ESC would bring up a menu of options, including "exit game"... Nope...

I'm in complete agreement with you regarding the menus. They are supposed to be easy and quick to navigate to. If I want to go to a different menu, I don't want to wait while my character walks to the next area or anything like that.

No problems regarding GfWL in this game though, though had some annoyances where my internet went down with another game, meaning I couldn't access any of my saved games since I had been using an online profile ¬_¬

Neil, I share your frustration with today's games... thats why if it has GFWL I do not buy it.

I always try "demo's" before I waste my hard earned.

Why don't you look at proper racing games like:

iRacing
rFactor
Live for Speed (NOT NEED FOR SPEED)

Why do people keep buying from crap publishers like Codemasters and wonder why they keep getting stung?

I like the effort put into the menu system, though I think DiRT2 did it better. It shows that real thought has been put into the game.

And GFWL, as much as I despise it for making saved games hard to backup and causing them to corrupt, really isn't a hassle normally. For any new game I login to my account, enter the serial and I'm done. It doesn't take more than a minute.

Erm, how about because DiRT2 and F1 2010 aren't "crap"? They have produced some of the best racing games in the industry.

For me those menu's show a distinct lack of thought.

GFWL is a scourge of PC Gaming. Even if I do not have many problems with it, its poor design and the design of GFWL related websites in general is just shockingly bad. It is like MS dedicated 5 bucks towards it.

And yeah menus in GRID/DIRT2/F1 are HORRIBLE.

I want to play THE GAME, not its menu. I hate waiting 30 seconds for menu to load after starting the game, after finishing the race, etc. Just so stupid waste of time.

Bring back classic NFS2/3 beautiful menus - fast, slick, expertly designed.

Only problem I had with GFWL is that I created an offline profile for Batman Arkham and realised I could actually use my xbox live to login and get achievements etc. so sounded a good idea and did just that, to then realise that my batman save game was gone..

I found the save file in the GFWL folder in my documents under my games edios and thought I could copy them across. I ended up buggering both accounts and save files and had to remove GFWL and re-add my xbox live account details and start Batman Arkham again..

Other then this, never had any other problems, I fire a GFWL game up like F1 2010 and xbox live account logs in for me, I get a little message telling me this, and a minute or less later I'm in the game. Simples.!!

I just don't like how offline and online accounts means you have two saves, but when you think about it.. It would.. Doh.!! but its annoying I couldn't copy the saves from two accounts over to a single account, I googled searched and appears it is hit n miss. works for some games not for others.

Annoying, but to get around this I just use 1 account now. My xbox live account.

I have sympathy for you OP, I've spent so much time troubleshooting GFWL issues since it was launched. I've had 3 different gaming machines and it has never run easily on any of them. I've had issues such as GFWL causing corruption in TCP/IP and WINSOCK causing me to have to run the NETSH commands to sort it, save game corruptions, games stuck in endless patching loops, being unable to sign in at all, GFWL being stuck trying to update, GFWL saying I'm signed in but then not letting me save etc.

I love Xbox live on my 360 and think it is a fantastic platform for online console gaming. I hate GFWL with a passion on the PC and I tend to avoid any game that uses GFWL these days. The only reason I got F1 2010 was because I'm nuts about F1 and can just about put up with having to use it but every time I launch the game I wonder if I'm going to spend the next hour fighting with my PC trying to just get GFWL to work.

I suppose to be fair the latest version of GFWL seems to be causing me fewer problems and is actually somewhat functional, but it will take a long time before I will ever trust it as a gaming platform like I trust steam. Like anything I guess it comes down to your own personal experience, Steam has always just worked for me, GFWL has given me nothing but headaches, if you're someone who has never had an issue with GFWL then I guess you just wonder what all the fuss is about.

Luckily for me I think F1 2010 is fantastic, so it's well worth the hastle imho :D

GFWL encrypts your savegames, making it almost impossible to transfer them to a new machine or OS. I tried all the different tricks and tips from the various forums but my Batman save was always miraculously 'corrupted' on my new PC.

So I'm very wary about GFWL games now.

Almost alike the OP I had pretty much a nightmare with GFLFLWL when I first experienced it upon installing Fallout 3. Bugger me with a pointy stick, the thing would spend about an hour installing one sodding patch and then tell me it will restart the game - but no, the bladdy thing decides to log me off Win7 without so much as a prompt!

After much ffffuuuu'ing about I got the patches installed and F3 was ok. I only wasted about 2.5hrs...

oh and Codemasters games smell of GOAT.

The fact that GFWL encrypts your savegames is enough to make me wary of it, but I have no problems getting a game up and running in minutes with it.. I just don't like not being able to recover savegames etc...

Steam on the other hand... I played Half Life 2 on both my laptop and desktop and with the steam cloud gaming the savegame followed me.

I really do wish that ALL games published had Steamworks. Steam just, well works. does what it says in the title.

Still F1 2010 uses GFWL and not a lot I can do about.

grid is crap aswell
barely any cars and barely any tracks

Hmm, it did fall short in the cars and tracks, but what was there was really well polished imho. Really enjoyed the game :) Perhaps it was too 'arcade' for the hardcore realism crowd, but for your average player wanting a bit of fun racing, it was fantastic.

Even had a few goes with the driver aids turned off for the 'real experience', didnt go well :D
