Thought I should share this experience of unbelievable incompetence demonstrated maximally by F1 autocentre monkeys in Harrow yesterday.

Basically my rear passenger side tyre got a puncture on Sunday night (pretty bad gash in the side wall as I hit a sharp kerb).

Anyways, the RAC man came within 20 minutes and put the space saver on the car. He used his torque wrench in conjunction with my Mcgard locking key. He had the old wheel off in 2 minutes and put the spare on.

So I ordered a new set of tyres (needed 2 new ones on the front anyway) as close to work as possible (so as not to drive on the space saver for any distance) and found F1 to be fairly competitive on prices.

They called me when the tyre came in and I took the car in. Firstly they put it on their lift and decided to use their portable drill to try and remove the wheel bolts (not on the space saver but on the front drivers wheel!). None of them would budge so they decided to use a 'more powerful wheel gun' which had no effect. This guy then decides to put the Mcgard key in the locking nut and run the gun on 'full power' as he watches smoke pouring out of the bolt hole. Finally he decides power tools will not do and gets a torque wrench. Guess what, now the locking key wont fit the locks!

He then tells me that the locking key wont fit the locks, implying that I had not got the right key! Anyway when they finally let me have a look at the key it was evident they had broken it from the inside (pics included below!). They then offered the 'air chisel' experience which could potentially 'damage the wheels.' I suggested they had caused enough damage already and left promptly. To be fair the monkey apologised when I told him that I was leaving.

Have ordered a new key from Mcgard should be here tomorrow (at the grand price of €16 + €17 (next day delivery) from Germany! I am thinking of sending the invoice to F1 autocentres HQ and seeing what comes of it.

I always go to Calthorpe Tyres in Olton where Dan does an awesome job and always removes/tightens the bolts by hand, so I was amazed that the bolts were on so tight. Then I remembered that the car had new pads fitted in October, by VW - that explains everything!

McGard have informed me that if I can return the old key to them they will send me a new one for free under warranty (but its costing about £20 to get the old one back to Germany!), and I can't wait 2 weeks for that to happen!

P.S. I feel it is my duty to change the other bolts on the car (5 yrs old now and getting rusty - the bolts not the car!). VW want £3.50 per bolt! Anyone know of anywhere else I can get them cheaper?

To be fair if I hadn't called the RAC I would probably still be in the car park trying to unscrew the wheel bolts! Plus didn't fancy being outside, in the car park, after a 13 hour shift of anaesthetising people, changing my wheel.

If a monkey can change his own wheel, which they probably can, where does that leave the chavs of F1 autocentre in Harrow.

Next day delivery from Germany!

That is impressive.

Yeah I am beginning to regret this. It was supposed to be DHL Express (which it may be) but the parcel has so far tracked from Stuttgart to Leipzig - all of 477 Km!!. Just making my bad week even worse!

i think youve got the wrong end of the stick chap. how else were they supposed to get the wheels off. rain dance?

if theyve been done up stupid tight and/or theyre going rusty (ie no grease on at all) then a lot of force will have to be applied. really simple logic that.

i think the blame falls with vw for not using any form of grease on there and/or going spastic with the impact gun

btw. rac to change a wheel? :D

Yes I agree VW have a part to play in this. But someone who apparently changes tyres for a living, then uses the most powerful wheel gun they have to destroy the locking key, is hardly admirable! When they used the other locking key (VW) with the full length torque wrench they were able to undo it, and the gun could not!

My point is your not supposed to use wheel guns with locking wheel bolts.

Leon Glencross the damage done was 37 euro not to mention the inconvenience caused. Send me a cheque for that amount and then we can talk about your image!

I simply cant understand why you would phone the RAC instead of changing a wheel. Is your time worthless or something, it will always take longer for them to come than just doing it yourself. You've no guarantee they'll be there in 20 minutes!

Well when the car is parked where you live and you have finished a 13 hour shift in the hospital; with no real need to move the car anywhere; surprisingly 20 minutes is enough to have the lunch you missed saving lives!

Surely, even the most unpractical of people, can manage undoing 4 or 5 bolts and operating a jack, without getting stressed or injuring themselves?

It's probably more challenging to do up your shoelaces.

Try telling that to the muppets at F1 Autocentres in Harrow.

Thank you for your response.

Again, to reiterate, we do indeed take all reviews of our services very seriously and are very sorry to hear that you weren't satisfied with your recent experience at one of our centres.

If you email your vehicle registration to us at [email protected] we will then be able to investigate further into your complaint.
We look forward to hearing from you.

Leon Glencross
Managing Director
Formula One Autocentres Ltd.

Im not offering you a review of the services you offer, I am simply offering you facts, including a picture. I shall get in touch with you and see how much investigation and pride you take in your service.

The irony is, but posting here with the name, email address and phone number, F1 Autocentres are probably just drawing more potential customers to this thread.

More customers who know who to contact to complain about their service. Any potential customers having read the thread probably wouldn't go there in my opinion.

This morning I went to Calthorpe Tyres, Dan got the locking wheel nuts off with no problem using a manual wrench. I have four new Contis on the car now.

Mr Leon Glencross has an email waiting for him.

Just had a phone call from Mr Leon Glencross about 30 minutes ago. He sounded like a top guy. He first apologised that his men were responsible for the broken wheel locking key and that he would refund me the full cost. He also said that there was to be an internal investigation as to why the event occurred in the first place.

As a gesture of goodwill he is also sending me some vouchers so that I try them again.

Seems like an excellent outcome. Looking forward to the cheque :-)

The cheque for £35 and vouchers for £25 (off any product) arrived in the post today. I guess I might buy a battery or something from them and fit it myself :-)
