Anyone watch this one last night?

It was the season that got me into f1 and brought back a lot of memories.

I was young at the time and didn't realise just how dominant the Williams was and though Damon was awsome :p

Around 2002 ish I stopped following but got back into it in 2007 and started following Hamilton to this day.

What seasons got you lot into this sport?

I started watching it around 1994 when I was twelve, unfortunately after Sennas death so I never got to see the man at work, as it were.

I always remember sitting down to watch the race while eating the Sunday roast. And getting up at stupid o'clock for the last race of the season with my Dad. Good times :)

OT, as I said in the other thread, I wish FOM would re-edit these from the archive as there is SO MUCH they miss out, plus they're not very well produced and the commentator sounds like he's just reading from a script thrown together 10 minutes before recording - Every race starts with 'and x makes a perfect start', even if they get a ton of wheelspin and bog down. But watching classic footage makes up for it all.

FYI the 1997 review is on tonight at 9pm.

Not watched the review just yet but I have it sky+d.

My dad got me into watching F1 since I was a toddler, he would get up early for races and so would I. Don't know which season I started, probably early/mid 90's.

I can remember as a kid making Duplo F1 cars that were blue and yellow (Williams) and green and yellow (Beneton), so that would have been early 90s that I first became aware of F1. I can also remember seeing Sennas death, although I can't remember if it was live or the news coverage. It was still more of an awareness than an actual following. 96 is probubly the first season I can remember following properly.

Portugal 96 is one of my favourite races. Along with OZ,Spa and Suzuka clearly defined the differences in ability between Damon and Jacques.

A driver and a racer. A great year.

It's such a shame that there wasn't a camera on the outside of the parabolica because that was one of the best overtaking moves in history and it was missed from outside the car.

I miss Williams at the sharp end :(

I'm with you there. They were the team at the front when I started following F1 so its a shame to see them struggling to even score points.

As harsh as it sounded I have for quite a while been saying that the problem with Williams was the 'old boys' Frank and Patrick trying to run and old school team the old school way in a Formula 1 that no longer worked like that. Its a shame that they have both now gone (well, stepped back), but hopefully it signals the start of a resurgence for the team.

For me, 1985 was my first season of watching. I was 7... :D

But Senna in the JPS Team Lotus was iconic. Although, living 2 miles from the Lotus factory meant we could hear when the cars were being sent around the track for their shakedown runs, nice low fence back then so we could go watch.

i remember my dad watching races that must have been late 80s/early 90s but i didnt start properly watching it until around 94/95

1982 was my first full season, when I was 8. Although on sundays before that I would watch sections of the races after dinner. I own the season reviews from 82 onwards purely because that's when my interested started. Sadly the ones from 82-99 are on vhs. So it's a while since I saw them.

1995 was the first season I started watching, I was 7 years old.

1996 was the first major season for me and I was a huge Damon Hill fan.

I've watched pretty much every single race since. :) I'm watching the 1997 review at the moment, Hungary 1997. What could have been! :D

wow its amazing to see how many jumped into F1 when Damon was winning a championship,

Just like the others my first season was when Hill won the championship, Seems like we need more british champions to get younger peole into F1 :D

This thread in 10 years will be full of people saying they got into F1 when button or hamilton won the championship

Ahh I watched the 1995 review the other night, brought back many memories, I think that was the year I started following F1, but having seen that 95 review, I realise I'd forgotten how unreliable and fragile the cars used to be! And how 'poor' some of the driving seemed be, so many lockups, spins, poor overtaking attempts etc - no doubt a lot of these were alleviated by the introduction of driver aids in years to come obviously. But still, made for great action. And you could just see the difference in class Schumi had over the field, and I must say, looking back I really don't think I rate Damon Hill that much, especially compared to other world champions in the past 15-20 years.

Monaco 1987 is the first race I think I remember watching (I would have been 7) and 1990 was the first year I was properly into the sport (I didn't get to watch many televised races but my Grandad used to buy me Motor Sport and Autosport magazines)

Even though I'm 21, I actually only started following F1 properly when Hamilton entered the sport. Obviously I was aware of F1 before then (maybe watched the odd race if I wasn't doing anything else), but I didn't follow it.

Same here, I grew up watching the odd race in 92/93 but really started following it in 94 (again I didnt see that much of Senna while he was alive)

I think since the resignation of Parr last week, Frank is back in a more "hands-on" roll for the time being (that was the impression I got from the BBC article about Parr). Looks like they have a better car this season and a couple of young chargers - so hopefully this all helps the ailing team (as you suggested as soon as a more "business" orientated head comes in).

Williams have the passion for F1, but that's not enough any more, you need to be able to understand the business side too. As much as Parr creeped the hell out of me, he was a step in the right direction for the team. Hopefully they can use the Venezuelan capital in the team at the moment to build a strong base to get some major sponsors and new staff on board. It would be such a shame for F1 to loose Williams.

My friend's dad had it on one day when I was around their house and I started watching from there. First full season I watched was 1997, remember my dad leaping off his seat yelling naughty words at Schumacher when he tried *that* move on Villeneuve in Jerez.. Haven't been to the F1 for 14 years now :(

Friday at Silverstone is only £45, and theres a chance there might be a mid season test coming back too. Try and get yourself along, even if its just to hear the noise!
