F1 exotic engine maps banned for 2012

I'm going to assume that this closes the holes in the regultions that Ross Brawn hinted at.

I do question why, still in an engine freeze, Renault and Merc aparently couldn't run without off throttle mapping when it was banned at Silverstone, but are happy for it to be banned at the end of the year?

I knew it was all smoke and mirrors.

Glad it has finally been sorted. The wording of the official regulations needs to be this:

all exhausts will be allowed to do is blow out gas at high pressure when the driver has his foot on the throttle.

:D

EDIT: Why is the picture for that article a brake cooling blower? Lol.

Until someone finds a loophole whereby no regulation states that the throttle pedal needs to be controlling the engine and so use bike style 'power twisters' (not a throttle, no siree) in the steering wheel instead :p

I believe that the engines this year have been so reliable due to the off throttle blowing. Surely It helps cool the bores etc?

Mercedes and Renault engine failures this year? (I can't remember any)

That is the exact argument that Renault and Merc used to keep their off throttle mappings when they were banned at Silverstone. Apparently its been an integral part of how their engines work since 2008, and therefore they need it to stop their engines going pop.

Funny that now they have the ability to redesign the rear of the car so it doesn't rely on off throttle blowing, they are happy for off throttle mapping to be banned :)

At least they wont sound like a skeleton having a **** in a biscuit tin off throttle any more :D

The noise actually grew on me throughout the year, It sounded awesome on tv. Although I should imagine at the track that it would be ear piercing!? How did it sound when you were at Spa skeeter?

I feel very sorry for the Renault drivers though.. I mean their Exhausts go bang bang just under the seat :p

It does. Brawn was commenting on the fact that without this rule change the blown periscope exhaust could be used accross the beam at the base of the rear wing, as opposed to the diffuser. Less of an overall effect, but still downforce to be had.

This ruling will prevent that.

So will the rule changes, front wings, exhausts, engine mapping, have any large impact to 1 particular team, or will it be across the board?

It'll affect the top teams more than the lower order as they extracted more downforce from their EBD setups. Red Bull, McLaren and Renault will be the biggest losers I'd have though, with Ferrari and Mercedes not far behind.

Whether this will bring the leading teams back in to the pack we'll have to wait until next year to find out.

mercedes had a crappy blown diffuser ross brawn already admitted it so i doubt it will effect them as much as rbr , mclaren and ferrari
