F1 Jake plugging the ipad?!

He mentions Twitter a lot too.

The ultimate catalyst for Nerd Rage from certain types?

There really hasn't they have used full os operating systems which is a massive downside for small touch screen.

They would perform exactly the same functions though, he could use it for the same and more. You can't say it's not a purchase based on the shiny gadgetyness of it all. It's testament to how good Apple's marketing is, they're miles ahead of anyone else. I really don't think that the technical details of the device go through most peoples mind when they buy one. It does internet.

We could sit and debate the pros and cons of this more, but it's been discussed at length already. I'm going to just go and enjoy the race. :)

you can't use them as easily, they have a clumsy full os it makes the UI vey hard to use and very slow apps.
It is much more than apple badge it is the apple UI.

I'm not a fan of the iPad, but this does seem like a legit use for it. Very convenient, live feeds etc, and he'd normally be holding a clipboard anyway.

The evil empire has a habit of “plugging” goods, laptops on news programs and the like. Scratch my back and I’ll plug yours. ;)

I never noticed it. Surely they've blanked the logo off?

The BBC can't so much as show a tin of Baked Beans with the label on usually...

Exactly. It's not like the device is more than he needs, he can easily get updated feed as and when is required, better than carrying a massive screen behind the camera with the feeds on isn't it? I can't think of anything better for the job, and I'm not a fan of the iPad myself.

He's responded on Twitter about him using an iPad, as he has obviously had a lot of questions asked about him using it. He said it was simply to replace his clipboard, as it holds all his notes, tweets and e-mails that he reads out.

I think it looks more professional than a clipboard, and it strikes me as being the kind of thing the iPad is actually useful for. That said, I'd imagine it's hard to read in the sun, when you consider they are outdoors all the time. I also doubt he could make a quick note like he could with his clipboard when the camera turns to David or Eddie.

I personally think Apple would have been on to a winner if they had designed a way to use the iPad as a tablet that you could also write on using a traditional stylus pen, it would have been ideal for that kind of note taking application.

A current tablet by another brand wouldn't fit the bill though.

Full OS that wasn't modified for touch input, heavier, slower, and to cap it off far worse battery life.

Not having a go at anyone in particular but I find the mix of hatred/jealousy/anger at this inanimate object incredible.

Whilst I don't see how the ipad is useful for the average person, I'd imagine it would be useful for his needs while at the race events. Very convenient. I think he uses it for twitter as well and I'd imagine in the F1 forum after the races.

+1

I've got an Apple laptop and they make some brilliantly designed devices and have a great desktop operating system, however... I can't see the point of the iPad in the current form. No hate here, if you want to buy it then do so. I hope you find it money well spent. I'd rather have a MacBook.

I think you can get a stylus that works and that type of application from third parties.

Really.

I think they missed a trick though by not having it as a standard feature though, I think they would have sold loads for people wanting to use it in a business environment, as it's not as bulky as a laptop, but more professional than a note pad.

Someone more technical, when I suggested it before said that you can't make it really be touch screen the way it currently is and a stylus device because of the glass that's used, or something.

So many people can't separate their legitimate dislike of Apple's marketing and media attention from the actual merits of their hardware and software (not just the iPad).

It's an epidemic I tell you.

Irrational Apple hatred is likely to be worse on a techie PC vendor forum such as this due to the type of people it's targetted at. Try somewhere more balanced like an F1 forum and they'd all be like "who cares?"

What's slightly daft - Jake on the F1 forum is currently sat there, iPad on the table, reading tweets and emails off his Blackberry.

I know a few people who have brought them and are now selling their laptops. As they have no use for teh laptop anymore and will never use it. Having a play with them, they are extremely good, do what 90% of people need (unless you use it for specific work related tasks) and teh form factor makes it so much better than a laptop.

Of course if it's more ideal for them than having a laptop then that's all good, and in the case of the guy on the F1 it is far superior to carrying a laptop around the pits all day.
