F1 Jake plugging the ipad?!

the thing is it's not a tablet PC, tablet pc's have a full OS on them. Hard to use, bulky and generally rubbish battery life.

Nah, don't agree, the modern ones are actually pretty good - I used them at my last job and were similar to the iPad. Plus they could multitask and had similar battery life to the top laptops, the lesser models a lot longer. You're thinking of the initial release models from 8 years ago or so.

Apple have just refined an old idea with the latest technology and their user friendly apps, marketing grunt and software, but that's what they do best. They are a cool brand in the eyes of many and have that "must have" factor. I do think their hardware is overpriced but that's what gives them an exclusive upper market and quality brand recognition.

They are nice bits of kit - I think however you'll see some more reasonably priced PC tablets re-emerging in popularity if it's a big success.

I couldn't have put it better myself spirits247. It's not a new idea, just a rehash + apple factor.

Also, when was a full OS hard to use? Maybe back before windows perhaps. You can quite easily scale fonts/icons etc if they're too small in almost any version of windows I can remember. Personally, I prefer fitting more on the screen as I still have good eyesight. Might change when I get old I guess!

I feel it's difficult to express your opinion if it's against an Apple product as people instantly assume you hate everything Apple based on principle, rather than your own opinion based on their products. I don't know why people react like that, feeling like they must defend them.

I like the idea of the tablet format, always have since having some staff in school use them for various purposes fairly well, though a laptop is often better for a lot of things. The ipad is just too limited and costs too much for me. If it does create more interest in the format, which it seems to have done, I hope that some other companies can come up with something similar that runs Win 7 starter, or Android is even pretty good now. Oh, and no glossy screen please! Price it at around £200 with wifi, BT, expandable memory, basic connectivity (without adapters please!) and they'd be onto something special.

What's with all the iPad hate ?

I understand why Apple attract so much negativity. On the whole it's because they deserve it. :-)

Having said that, if both the iPhone and iPad were within my budget, and not locked into the Apple universe, I'd like them both. I certainly look forward to a more flexible version of the iPad from someone else, though getting the touch interface right is what Apple have perfected, and matching that may be hard.

I have been waiting for a device like this for a long time though. As soon as I got my first touch enabled phone I immediately realised this was going to be a great, intuitive way to control and manipulate all sorts of things. I'd just prefer it if Apple weren't able to get too much of a stranglehold on this kind of tech.

They are not designed for small touch screens, except maybe Windows7, even then I think the ones I have seen have had a lot of customisation on UI.

Yes it is "old" tech done in a new way mainly UI, that is what makes it work.

There are android and other types coming out in the next few months. How they compare is yet to be seen.

I saw the Dell Streak preview on CNET I think, looks pretty good as a more compact alternative. Sports android and a 5" screen IIRC. Not sure what the price will be, though a larger version, maybe 10" screen could be quite good.

Saying that, being able to hold it in one hand would be nice, there's a trade off between how easy browsing is and screen size/ease of carrying. Perhaps 6-7" makes the most sense.

B) Can you afford one? As there's always the 'zomg I'm jealous. I'll just **** it off to make me fell better' element of peoples criticism.

LOL, should everyone who criticises Apple products post their salary?

I love how some Apple defenders think people are jealous because they think the expense of the hardware makes it out of the reach of everyone that doesn't "get it" or buy in to the idea.

Some people don't "get it" because they realise that paying over the top for hardware is a silly idea.

Also on topic, I think it is the first legitimate use of the iPad I have seen, no problems with its use at all.

Ipad...jesus. Apple inflate an ipod touch and nothing more and thats all it takes for the Apple fanboys to get "moist".

It would be better if he had a case for it, maybe easier to hold with it being grippy?

Agree with others saying this is the first real use for it :p

didnt someone mention lewis hamilton or someone selling one aswell? or was that jake mentioning he bought one from whoever it was

I know nothing about the iPad. Could someone who has used one or has knowledge of them confirm what the functional differences are between it and the iPod Touch/iPhone? I just want to know if there's any truth to the "it's just an oversized iPod Touch" claims.

screen size. it is "just" an oversized itouch. but that is what it's meant to be, after all an iphone does all media content, but on a silly little screen. it is also faster.

You know people have a use for a media device with a decent sized screen, shock horror. It's a well deigned device that works amazingly well.

If you consider a well designed device to be an iphone magnified...

What's not well designed about it?

It has an excellent screen, An amazing UI, does everything it is designed to do very well and fast, a great battery and is a utterly slick media device.

It isn't even overly expensive. Look at any nokia/htc or any other phone and how much it costs with out a contract. Seeing as people like to compare it to a phone. Then realise how much bigger teh screen is, how much more memory and how much faster it is.

Seeing as you can get a much more capable netbook for much less than the price of an entry level ipad, that supports flash out of the box, and multitasking.

it doesn't need full multitasking and it supports flash through apps, ass aps auto save and open close instantly. you can play music in teh background.
A net book is a different market and a different form factor, that is not suitable for the way people use an Ipad.
Netbooks are great but different UI and different market/use.

You're confusing "well designed" with "value for money". A netbook isn't made out of machined aluminium nor does it have a glass screen.
