Codemasters has announced that a free-to-play F1 game is in development. F1 Online: The Game is a top-down racing game with what promises to be an in-depth management system, allowing you to play as both the driver and the team boss.

VP of Codemasters Online, David Solari says the game is "an exciting opportunity to bring our passion for the sport and our expertise in racing to a new audience. With a bespoke design for accessible browser play, F1 Online: The Game will deliver a persistent world of Formula One to players through their internet browser, perfect for anytime racing."

Players will able to take part in the Formula One World Championship and standalone Grand Prix events, as well as practice, qualifiers and a range of time trials.

Iconic tracks - from Monaco to Silverstone - will be realised using track data and assets from the forthcoming F1 2011.

F1 Online: The Game is set to launch in Q1 2012.

Sounds good to me!

Will look forward to 2012.

Finally a management game for people who like Motorsports (specifically F1 :D), though this could all go downhill if Sky get F1 broadcasting lisence.

I just want a game where you can punch martin brundle in the face repeatedly.

Wow, a lot of hate for Brundle right there.

Personally I think he is the best sports commentator/analyst on the BBC. Far better than any of the ex-football player analysts that are topping up their pensions at the tax payers expense while lounging on the Match of the Day sofa.

Any game where you could punch Paul Merson or Dwight Yorke repeatedly in the face would secure my pre order.

Rant over.

Free is always good! But man, I would love a remake of Micro machines or even Revolt. Too many shooters nowadays and not enough pick up and play games.

Cool, this is the first I'm hearing about it. I wonder if it will be like those other online F1 esq management games, GP manager Pro comes to mind. I would absolutely love a new management game, a proper one, not this online gubbins :p You'd think EA would take on F1 management again considering it's popularity right now. I can only dream.

Will we be able to race against AI whenever we want or will it be set races each day against others ?
Will upgrades take time to apply, for instance 24h for a new wing ?

I'm singing up. Hopefully get some beta access :)
