Been looking at these TV's for a while now and what drew me in was the black levels. In the shops with bright lights they look stunning. Now I watch TV at home in very low to no light, I understand that the blacks won't be as deep with no light but how do they compare to other screens? At the moment I have an 32" R74 and the blacks at night are poor to say the least.

I've had a LE32R73 and the LE40F86 I'm now on is capable of significantly deeper blacks. What you have to consider is that contrast ratio is brightest:darkest output, so it only takes a small change in the black-levels to make the contrast ratio figure look far more favourable. In other words, the blacks are considerably improved, but noticeably not at plasma levels. For an LCD the blacks are very impressive, and only a completely darkened room really shows any room for improvement.

The LE40F86 is a great screen, my only niggles are the round-robin source selection and use of a HDMI-switching amp causes JustScan to turn itself off when you change sources :(
