Fabrice Muamba collapses on pitch during FA Cup match

Received CPR.....not good at all. If he wasn't breathing and hasn't been intubated at the scene, then I'm afraid he is dead.....very sad if true.

Been rushed to hospital, reminds me of Marc-Vivien Foé. Sad times :/

Makes me wonder if some football players are too fit. I hope he pulls through.

This is being discussed in the actual football forum in the weekend football thread for anyone interested.

It looks bad. :(

Couldn't hear any of that on my iPad. Please sum it up.

Received CPR on the pitch and in the tunnel, then was taken to hospital in the back of an ambulance still receiving CPR. Match was cancelled and stands were emptied.

No such thing as 'too fit'. Fit is just a nebulous umbrella term that doesn't really describe specifics. There is such a thing as over-training and putting massive stress on muscles though, and the heart, being no exception, isn't a muscle that you want to do that stuff too regularly. You can be at peak fitness and over-do it, just as much as a beginner can. Just look on Google for studies on the relationship between long-term long distance running and heart health... it's not good.

This doesn't cover undetected heart defects/hereditary stuff/illness etc, although massive physical exertion may well be a trigger for it to rear it's ugly head up.

I think the fitness levels of footballers are way overstated - it's a game of skill foremost and physicality second. They don't even come close to track or endurance athletes.

absolutely correct, sure they are a lot fitter than when Maradonna and Pele used to be playing, but they still drink and smoke, etc on a regular basis. whereas in other professional sports that is a complete no no.

CPR for over ten minutes and shocked with the defib twice, and he is now stable?

That is some good medical work

Some of these guys do 15km in 90 minutes as well as playing the actual sport.

That's quite the endurance. Not that its anything to do with this thread!

Get well soon Muamba

5Live are pretty adamant in not reporting what Sky have with the hospital reporting that he is stable.
