No. When you use Facebook on a Windows machine, it installs certain files onto your machine to allow the Facebook applications to interface with the .Net runtime enviromnent. This allows applications to improve their performance by directly being able to access resources on your machine, which offloads work from the Facebook servers and reduces the internet bandwidth required for apps such as poker etc. These files can sometimes get corrupted through sloppy coding on certain applications. This can make certain applications fail to run including the IM client.
Facebook can run in a restricted mode for platforms such as Mac and Linux, but on Windows you will need to run the uninstaller package in your start menu and then log back into Facebook which will reinstall your runtime components.
