Facebook Hits One Billion Active Users

The maths is weak in this one...

It's quite staggering really. 1 in 7(ish) worldwide.

When you exclude China (banned), it drops to about 1 in 6 (ish)...

Twitter is just a fancy RSS feed. Facebook is something interesting... Also, seriously... Dist how do none of your friends have facebook! See the above stats! xD

Especially when you consider how many of the population don't have access to a pc. I'd like to know the percentage of pc users that use FB. Must be ridiculously high

I have a couple of friends who are on FB but use it twice a year!

I have another couple of friends who are not on it though.

However I have friends and family all around the world, from Canada to Guatemala, to Australia, Cyprus and France. Facebook is just perfect for me to keep in touch with them and still feel partially "involved" in their lives. It's a great tool. :)

1 billion accounts != 1 billion people.

I work at a company developing facebook games. Between 20 of us we have hundreds of facebook accounts, and it's the same with most of clients. Whilst we are probably in the minority there are numerous nefarious reasons to have many accounts.

Probably just a headline for them to try to attract more advertising revenue etc.

I bet over half of those accounts are never used or are duplicate accounts.

1 billion accounts != 1 billion people.

Exactly. Some people create an account for themselves and another one for their dog / hamster / monkey etc.

Facebook wasn't the first, just it got lucky & became the popular one.

Yeah, Faceparty was the main one for a bit wasn't it? It shot itself in the foot though by making some of its features paid-only. Then come 2007, everyone was sending each other buddy invites to Facebook.

I thought facebook became popular because it was the one that most uni graduates used to stay in touch with their friends.

One thing that I dont get is people who make facebook pages, and add their entire family and relatives to it .... sad.

Why is that sad? It's pretty good as a communication platform and is a reasonably good way of hosting and sharing images.
