Facebook Hits One Billion Active Users

Because most people wouldnt like their family seeing their drunken pictures or snooping on all their friends.

That's what all those lovely security settings are for..

I have my manager, the head of the school and a load of teachers from work on my facebook, but can they see my status updates? Hell no!

Also i think if you have a family that can't laugh with you about drunken photos you have a pretty boring family or you're strangely shy of them.

I think I was one of the first to join fb here, but I hardly use it, it was much better before all the likes/games etc, a communication tool for friends and family.

All I have now is a status feed on my phone, a 3rd party access app and a calender sync for birthdays.

I would be interested to know what % of the world with inet access are members

I don't have my family on it, it caused hassle for my sister's bf who befriended my step dad lol I do have cousins/sisters tho

I joined FB late 2005 because of my now wife being at Uni and she needed to be "in a relationship" so I signed up. I used it until about 18 months ago when i just got bored of seeing the same people posting the same crap day in and day out.

Facebook itself is fine, but what annoys me now is the number of companies that rely on it as a main online presence, and when you need to be signed in to view most of the stuff.

1 billion accounts != 1 billion people.

I work at a company developing facebook games. Between 20 of us we have hundreds of facebook accounts, and it's the same with most of clients. Whilst we are probably in the minority there are numerous nefarious reasons to have many accounts.

I see contacts come up quite frequently for people to make spoof accounts etc for marketing purposes. This must make up a surprising number of their 'Active users'.

I log on to facebook about once a week and all I see is my female friends posting pictures of their dog, commentating on their new shoes or talking about the weather.

Whatever the exact numbers it's still pretty incredible. Can't believe somebody referred to it as a "fad" :D I have an account, check it for a couple of minutes every day or two just for anything interesting. Wouldn't bother me in the slightest if it vanished tomorrow. However, you can't discount the amazing reach it has and the fact it's become a household name to people of all ages. Facebook will still be talked about in hundreds of years from now (at least in history classes...) when referring to our current time-frame. It's synonymous with the internet age.
