Facebook Privacy Question

Some guy posted on my wall on an old facebook account and I got an email saying 'Mr. X is waiting for you to see his post on your timeline' from Facebook.

How does he know if I have seen it? Does he get notified when I sign in? I don't want that to happen.

It's a trick. An automated responce telling you to log back in so that the 'some guy' can get a reply from you.

This isn't just Facebook that does this.

I deleted my facebook account.. never regretted it.
