Facebook - weeding out the dross

I'm a very casual FB user. I post rarely but mainly use it to see what friends are up to - particularly friends I don't live near or see regularly.
What is really hacking me off is the constant stream of dross such as 'X needs a burlesque dancer and a turnip in Mafia Wars' or 'X has lost a sheep from her farm - can you help to get it back?

It seems that these are all FB games they play, but I couldn't care less to be honest. If it was all I saw from these people they would be deleted in a flash, but I also get useful updates from them too.

Is there any way of blocking the notifications for their applications/games? I know I can block mine, but these are notifications from them.

Any help for a FB noob would be appreciated.
 
Just Hover next to the stupid game/app notification & it gives you Two options, One to hide the Person & the other to hide the application, Just click hide application.
 
It would be nice to have one setting which stops news feeds of all apps, instead of clicking hide on all of them as they appear.

FB is becoming annoying.
 
I've got about 20 people hidden and about 20 apps too, very happy with the state of it now.

I love facebook :(

It really is I can name about 6 people on my friends list who just won't get off FB for more than 2 hours. The result is my news feed gets clogged up with absolute crap. FB needs to go back to the basics and have a setting to turn off seeing any applications be it requests to add them or any news posts on them.

I am also sick of seeing cryptic messages like "so and so is feeling???" or "I will do better!!".. mainly girls do this a lot. It does my head in!

I think it is time to do a FB friends cull.
 
Perfect, that has done the trick! I've been getting annoyed by this for ages and will make for a far less tedious facebook experience!

I also dislike when some people put up stuff like 'oh, I'm missing a special someone so much, I want to give them a big wet sloppy kiss' or whatever...
 
The hide feature is OK, I just wish they had a way for it to not appear in the first place. The amount of crap on there is unbeliveable. You can learn a lot about people by the amount of crap they send on to you.
 
This is why I don't post those on my FB. There is an option for them to post it to their wall and they go yes. I play those games and I press no. Its not hard
