Facebook Working On Quest 3 & 4, Zuckerberg Wants Face & Eye Tracking

Glad to see facebook pushing the envelope - not sure I would want my eye and face data uploaded to the zuckerberg database though

Eye tracking has huge implications for performance, but also for privacy.

It enables foveated rendering which means the graphical detail can be ramped right up, but eye tracking means they will know what you're looking at, so when advertising is implemented they'll know what ads work!

You're already sending enough data to zuckerburg with your four cameras and microphone. It's also been shown that the way you move your body and arms can also be used to identify you from another headset user.

Much, much more than that!

this paper provides a structured overview of personal data that can be inferred from recorded eye activities. Our analysis of the literature shows that eye tracking data may implicitly contain information about a user’s biometric identity, gender, age, ethnicity, body weight, personality traits, drug consumption habits, emotional state, skills and abilities, fears, interests, and sexual preferences. Certain eye tracking measures may even reveal specific cognitive processes and can be used to diagnose various physical and mental health conditions.

It's no wonder Mark is keen for eye tracking, it's a positive goldmine of information. I've long been excited for the performance possibilities of dynamic foveated rendering combined with ML based sparse rendering for outside the foveal spot but it's definitely a double edged sword when it comes from a company like facebook.

Im not really bothered what facebook use data about me for, as long as it doesn't compromise my personal security.

From a hardware perspective I would hope to see a wider FOV.

Just reading up a bit on the XR2, and it actually supports 7 concurrent cameras. So it doesn't even need a new chip to be able to add another 2 cameras into the system for eye tracking.

We also know that it's underclocked and limited at the moment too. So there's a bit of breathing room to up the resolution, to allow for a bigger FOV.

Battery power and cooling would seem to be the bigger blockages for the immediate future, which is pretty cool.
