I'm running F@H console on both CPUs of my Centrino Duo laptop, under Windows XP. Would I do better to install SMP, or would that do better on a Core 2 Duo?

You would probably find it was close to the deadlines, also the winsmp client can be a huge pain to keep running long enough to complete a WU especially if you need the laptop to be mobile (unplugging network cable or getting out of range of wireless will normally mean losing the WU)

I'd stick with the normal clients personally

I tried the SMP client once, once it was obvious I couldn't meet the deadlines I reverted to using two std clients.

You could always try it though, a few hours running is all you need to see if you can make the dealines, but they are tight.

My laptop only runs at 1.83GHz, so I think it would struggle. So I'll stick with the standard clients.

I've completed a couple of SMP WUs on my 1.66GHz C2D laptop so it can be done. It was on continuously and not doing anything other than crunching though.

That's a C2D though - he's talking about a Core Duo unless I'm very much mistaken

That's right: a Centrino Duo. I do have a Core 2 Duo laptop as well, but I need to keep that mobile, so I'm still BOINCing on that one.

BTW, is normally OK to shut-down standard F@H console client, using normal Windows shutdown, without risking losing a WU?

If running as a service it's usually fine - if running in a window then I'm not sure to be honest :p

A CD 1.83Ghz will make the deadlines easily if it folds most of the time.

My CD 1.66Ghz does one frame of a 2651 in almost exactly 30 minutes, and a frame of a 2610 in 34 minutes. Folding constantly, it would complete the WUs with respectively 48% and 41% left before the deadline.

So you only really need to fold just over half the time. If you can leave it on for long periods and you don't do anything else performance-intensive, I would go for it.

I get about 800ppd on a 2651 so expect closer to 900 if you leave it on all the time. The noise might just drive you insane though, that's why I don't run SMP on it constantly!
