Failed modem in DSL-AC68U

The modem has failed in my ASUS DSL-AC68U so I bought an Archer AC2100 modem/router to replace it. Trouble is the wi-fi signal isn't as strong and a number of smartplugs are losing their connection with the TP-link Archer AC2100. So I'd like to try putting the ASUS into router only mode using my NowTV Hub 2 as a modem. After much faffing around I'm struggling to set things up correctly. I've figured how to put the NowTV hub into DSL only mode (there was a WANOE option too but I thought that might not be relevant so selected DSL only) and turned off the wireless AP's and then connected it via ethernet to the ASUS. The bit I need help with is getting the ASUS correctly configured. The ASUS ethernet ports had internet connectivity but I couldn't connect via wifi to the ASUS SIDS. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

Would also appreciate any recommendations for a better modem/router combo than the Archer for a VDSL line. TBH the ASUS has served me well for many years until I guess the modem fried (there's no DSL light).
