Failed system - my diagnosis.

I would buy a really cheap stick of ddr3.

It's always good to have spare ram for testing, plus it's the easiest thing to test!

It's a tough one but as the guy above says, buy cheap RAM just too test, bad memory can cause some ridiculous errors. Failing that I'd try another CPU even if it costs a few quid. Or if the CPU is under warranty you could chance just sending it back on a whim.

Sounds to me as if the main culprit could be the usb ports - maybe they have fused - as apparently they have an inbuilt fuse circuit, but afaik not replaceable part. The fact that the 9A code keeps popping up maybe supports this theory? As for a solution - a new mobo seems the only recourse if indeed this is the problem.

Have you also checked the cpu/socket fo bent pins? It may also be worth checking that the cpu block is not overtight as this can cause many boot problems also.

If I have suggested already tried fixes etc - sorry.

Just noticed post 16 &17 regarding z77 - sounds as though the IMC on the chip could be at fault - only way to tell is to try cpu in known working board to see if same error occurs.

fitted an i3-2120 and all is working perfectly so unfortunately it was the 2600K.

It's less than 18 month sold so I will try to return it for a replacement as I now have a spare PSU, spare Z77 board and 2x4GB RAM!
