failed windows update (KB914388)

Hi,
"Security Update for Windows XP (KB914388)" keeps failing to work on my XP pro comp. All the update site suggests is trying again... same thing happens every time.

Anyone else had this happen? What could be causing it? I've never had a failed update before.

I'll do a complete boot-time scan tonight with Avast, but I doubt there will be anything. My last scan was quite recent and I'm firewalled, etc. I don't run dodgy programs and all that.

EDIT: my comp is clean according to Avast boot-time scan.

It should download the update to a folder called WUTEMP in the root of your C partition, if it fails when trying to install it through the site, run it manually.

Wow that's a radical site I tried it but it gave the same result. Thanks though... I might use that in the future... interesting.

So I went back to windows update and checked the optional updates... chose three of those... two of them installed, one of them failed... rebooted... then tried the critical update again and viola it worked ... so one of those "optional" updates was more like a "critical" update

Whew! I was thinking I might need to reinstall xp... thank goodness.
