Failed Windscreen Wipers

Afternoon all,

On leaving home this morning I realised that my front windscreen wipers wouldn't work. I've been having problems with them for a little while because they wouldn't wipe the screen smoothly on the slowest setting, it would just stop part way, but it worked fine if I put it on the second setting.

With this in mind, my first thought was the motors had died, but it also won't spray anything on the screen through the washers, it's not just that they are blocked, as there isn't the usual whirring noise coming from the washer motor when you try and spray it? This has also been going down hill for a while though.

Possibly co-incidentally, I noticed for the first time yesterday that the rear windscreen wipers engages automatically when I select reverse? Is this normal? It sounds sensible enough, it just struck me as odd that I'd never noticed it before, especially as the fronts have now apparently failed.

Also, while I'm on the subject of dodgy wipers, the rear washer dosen't work anymore either although I can hear the rear motor whirring, and I've noticed screenwash on the bootlid?

The car is a 98 Rover 216 SLi.

Any ideas on what might have died (OMGHGFBBQETC!!!), and how big a job and how expensive it's likely to be?

Any help/input appreciated :)

Not sure about the wipers but I had a similar problem with my rear washer and it was as simple as a pipe coming off somewhere between the bottle and the nozzle. Is there any water under your car when you operate the rear washer?

Yeah, I said Bootlid in my opening post, but actually meant the top of the bumper/bottom of the boot door.

I think I read somewhere that it's pretty common to have to pipe crack on the MK3's, but can't remember too much about it...

That part has never been a massive problem as the rain usually clears up the rear screen, and failing that I'm just forced to wash it... :p

The bit that concerns me is my front wipers not working as I'd been in trouble when it rains... :o  :p
