Failing motherboard

hi all i have a P5Q deluxe and a core 2 quad 6600 and a gtx1060
the system is in excess of 6 years old

problem i have is every other boot the pc seems to boot with no graphic output
i can toggle the caps lock but no output to the monitor
if i do a bios reset (cmos clear)
the system will boot but all my icons are moved to the left hand side?

question is what do you think is failing
gtx1060 is only a year old the rest of the build is over six years old

Do you have spare graphics card you could try?

yes i have
but haven't tried it yet will do at weekend
that was my first thought IE failing graphics card but its under a year old
and the bios reset always brings the system back to life which makes me think it is the chip set ???

What PSU? When was the last time the CMOS battery was changed?
