Just put a system together for a friend;

(my old) Q6600
(my old) MSI P7N SLI Platinum
4x1GB DDR2 OCZ platinum 800MHz
Asus GTX260
WD black 500GB
OCZ modular 500W modXstream thing
Case is some cheap and cheerful thing.

And it wont post.
When I press power button fans start and light up for about 5 seconds and then the whole thing shuts down again. Mobo is lit up when plugged in.

I have tried with just 1 stick of RAM in DIMM 0, then DIMM 1, then a different stick in DIMM 0 then DIMM 1, no joy.
Tried unplugging HDD + DVD + 3xRAM no change . . .
Unplugged and replugged everything, checked all power connections.

The mobo and CPU were working together and working well 2/3 weeks ago and have since been kept in an anti-static bag on a piece of padding in a box.

CPU and heatsink(stock) have as decent a connection as you could expect.

Any ideas on what could be going wrong ?

Oh yeah, forgot to say I already did the CMOS, no joy =[

Ive just started to pull it all apart - it is possible its shorting on thecase, has some pretty retarded mounts. Hope its as simple as that.

Built outside of case, no change.
Powers for a couple of seconds then off again.
Anyone got any ideas ?

EDIT: no change with a 9800GTX inplace of the GTX260 (tested first cause I had it handy).
Im thinking it will most likely be the CPU, mobo or PSU. Gonna test these later.

mobo has no onboard graphics.

tried-
mobo CPU 1RAMin0 GPU = fail
mobo cpu 1RAMin1 GPU = fail
mobo CPU 4RAM GPU = fail
mobo CPU 1RAMin0 = fail

EDIT: Ive only tried CMOS reset using inbuilt mobo button. If i was to do it by removing the battery how long would I need to wait ?

Describe your problem better. How does the system power up ? How long for ? When did the problem start and did you make any notable changes ?

My system powers up all ok, powers up until i turn it off and i have had the motherboard for about 4 months but have never used it :).

does this card work on another pc ok and do you have another card to test on your pc?

@IGBC - taking out the CMOS battery to reset it usually takes about 30mins.
doesnt look good, have you also tried another psu and/or other parts?

Only tried switching with the GPU so far.
Getting my bros (nearly identical) system now to fiddle about with.
Q6600
MSI P7N SLI Platinum
4x1GB DDR2 GeIL 1066MHz
GTX275

My old Q6600 works in my bros rig. narrows it down to my old mobo or the new PSU . . . right ?
im thinkin mobo, not the first time one of these will have broke on me. My bros needed RMAing too.

erm, im kinda confused . . . well i suppose it could be the PSU.
The old mobo works in my bros rig with his Q6600.

Not yet, im getting there lol.
Still no joy with the setup in OP. If its not the PSU i dont know what it could be . . .

His Hiper PSU just booted it all up.
Guess its another happy trip down RMA street -.-
