My family and I are going for a short break (5 ish days) for my 18th in December. We're looking for a fairly cheap place to stay but not too cheap. As my dad put it "We don't want to end up in a rough area of brooklyn".

We know some people who have just been and they stayed in somewhere something like "Days", although google doesn't display anything so this name could be wrong.

So could someone who has been to NY recommend a nice 3* hotel?

Well if you want the cheapest rooms right in the middle of manhattan, then I fully recommend the YMCA. Its more of a hotel than our YMCA's so no weirdos looking at you at night.

But when I mean cheap I mean a tiny room with a bunk and a tv and shared toilets e.c.t

All very clean but might not be the best for the kids :)

For me it's perfect tho.

Edit: Beat me to it sedm, it's the Vanderbilt YMCA if I remember correctly.

When I went in Jan 2005 for 7 nights I stayed at the Belvedere (http://www.belvederehotelnyc.com/)
felt totally safe walking to and from the hotel at nights.

Modern day Manhattan is great, even walking through the dodgyer parts of the village at night is fairly safe.

To be honest, you don't have to be near the main parts of manhattan, the metro there is so cheap, and easy to use, it's almost impossible to get lost on it.

And if all else fails, a taxi ride is much better value than at home.

I've been before with Lynnie, we stayed in the Ramada New Yorker hotel in mid-town Madhatten. Was a lovely hotel, really close to Madison Square Garden and the Empire State Building, I recommend it :)

Looks like a good option :)

sedm1000, a YMCA wouldn't be suitable.

PeterNem, that hotel looks a bit on the expensive side for what we're looking for.

Edit: Just shown dad the price of the New yorker and it's rather expensive. Anyone recommend any cheap places?

Me and Mrs Pants went in Jan last year, stayed in the Hotel Deauville in midtown, pretty reasonable, good service and good location. We just booked to go back in November, Thomas cook special deal :D, staying at the Comfort Inn, 1 block up from The ESB and on the same street at Macys. Looks a good one.

I agree that it's not bad and looks to be in a great location. It's just that there is 5 of us and it's going to cost quite a bit and therefore just out of budget :(

It is :) It's right next to one of the subway stops so you can get pretty much anywhere in New York from there, plus as I said there are several attractions within easy walking distance. There's also a cinema right around the corner, something to do maybe in the evening, and plenty of good shops neaby :)

Shame I cant seem to get any prices on rooms with 2 beds - looks like they are all sold  - but Im guessing Ill have to ring to confirm - wonder what Ill be doing at work tomorrow ;)

Gonna be 3 of us so need 2 rooms...

No chance of free WIFI eh Davey? - that would be the icing on the cake :P

I've stayed at the Vanderbilt (albeit 10yrs ago) and it's not bad at all. As you say, it's more like a hotel than a YMCA.

I can't remember how much I paid but I was a student at the time so it won't have been much :)
