Fake Degree Problem

I've been asked by a former Canadian co-worker, if I can find out whether a Degree (issued by a UK University) is fake or not. He is in the process of employing somebody, but he's a little suspicious that the guy never took the Degree he claims to have. Is there some kind of Database that can be checked, online?

This is all taking place overseas, and the guy in question never brought his Degree with him. How convenient.

I told him to just call the University in question, and ask whether 'Joe Bloggs' studied for 'Degree Title' during 'xx' years. But I'm guessing it won't be that simple.

How would an employer normally check such things?

It's a new role for him. He said the previous people in his Position, simply never checked. This is in China, so that's no suprise.

I guess you guys are right then. I'll pass that onto him. He was just concerned that the UK may have some different 'system' compared to Canada, and I wasn't so sure.
