Fake oil?

Stupid question. Please humour me :p

Can you get... fake oil? Reason I ask is that I've found a shop on Ebay selling a top brand, high quality oil for about 40% less than Opieoils etc want for the same oil. Could it be dodgy? They certainly look reputable.

Is there anything to be worried about when buying oil like this? The price just seems too good to be true? It'll come to £54 including post for 8 litres. OpieOils want £78..

It probably isn't fully synthetic whereas the stuff that's 40% dearer probably is ;)

Even if it says fully synth on the bottle, doesn't always mean it really is. There is a "fake" version of fully synth that doesn't quite breach trading standards laws - unfortunately.

It's branded Castrol Edge 0w30 Fully Synethetic, with sealed Castrol bottles.

£45 + postage from this guy or £77 inc postage from OPIE oils.

Or £100 for 6 litres from BMW.

opie is 69 inc from the bay for that oil :)

The other seller looks ok though...

It seems a bit too cheap for me, its not hard to reseal a bottle if the seal is removed gently in the first place. I would pay the £69 mentioned above to be on the safe side as after all its going to be protecting a engine which is expensive to replace.

I got an oil kit from honda with a 1l bottle of Mobil oil. It wasn't sealed, so I would be worried.

I'd rather Opie Oils than ebay.

I know I posted about buying your own oil instead of using BMW's Fox but actually giving this some thought it doesn't make sense to buy from a possible shady source.

When you factor in the cost of oil compared to other running costs it's not a very significant expense at all.

Personally I think it's mad to buy oil online due to crazy postage costs that must be involved. Why don't you ring around a few trade-parts places. You will find one with the oil you require in stock/able to order. As you know I recently bought my service items from a trade place and couldn't believe how much cheaper everything is from them compared to Ford or even Ebay!

But thats the point - I'm trying to find out if the source really is shady. It looks like a reputable supplier, its just the price that has me wondering.

Correct but whats wrong shopping around for the cheapest source for a certain product? It's not as if I'm trying to buy a crappy oil - I've chosen the oil I want. Now I wish to minimise the price I pay.

Crazy postage costs like.. £8? Or free from Opie Oils?

Trade prices like that are fine for cheapo stuff but I doubt very much they'll have the oil I am after at prices less than Opie Oils for example.

Surely a business student like yourself realises that the postage is never "free". £8 to deliver something worth £80 is quite a lot. Especially when I could pick it up locally for around a few pence in fuel.

Trade places do stock or are able to order high quality products and oils. Just have to find the right one.

£8 i standard courier charge for virtually anything from a graphics card to a set of brake discs

I really doubt you can pick up 8 litres of Castrol Edge 0w30 locally for less than £70!!

Had an email from the seller. He says it's all genuine and factory sealed but that he doesn't make very much on it as he uses it as a loss leader for the other products in his store. He also says this is the last month he is selling it becuase he can't get hold of any more at the price he normally buys it for.

Hmmm... seems ok?
