This Friday the Falklands mini mod for the BF2 mod, Project Reality (PR), is released. It's to played out on an 8km x 8km map, which is basically huge, so if you do fancy it, don't think you'll be in a firefight as soon as you spawn. No, in this game you'll try and out-think your opponent to take control of strategic points on the map. You'll build bases, defences and so on. If you've got the ability you can fly the jets and helicopters too.

Here is the official word from the developers... FALKLANDS

Be sure to watch the trailer.

If you don't already know about PR it's basically Battlefield2 made more realistic by removing spammy things and adding teamwork as an essential part of the game. Imagine a FPS crossed with a RPG and a strategic military game.

I got tired of the run and gun COD type games, and sought something more realistic. Upon finding PR I've not really played anything else, apart from a bash at DayZZZZZZZ (yes, it's boring imo) and the incredibly spammy BF3.

And the beauty about PR is that it's built on an old game's engine(BF2), so a mediocre gaming PC by today's standards would run this game as smooth as, on full settings.

There's hundreds of youtube clips showing actual gameplay, if you're intrigued, just search youtube for Realitymod, or Project Reality.

P.S I know I'm coming across as having a vested interest, but I don't apart from the fact that I blinking well love this game. See you on the battlefield.

I really want to fly around that map, it looks like they've actually mapped all of it in a smaller scale!

Hey, it's not just about the new Falklands release, there's much more to PR that's already running.

There's Insurgency mode, which will see you fight as or fight against the Taliban or Iraqi insurgents versus the various Western allies.

Then there's the desert maps and the jungle/tree-a-plenty type maps.

Also, I'd recommend watching some Youtube vids before spending the time installing, just to make sure it's for you. Reason being, is because it's trying to be more realistic, things plentiful in BF2, may be scarce in this. Like sniper rifles for instance, and shoulder launched Anti-tank rockets.

Also, you may decide to play as a transport pilot, and if you do, all you will do for the whole duration of the round is fly infantry around and drop off supplies. I personally love that aspect of the game, because in real life military pilots don't go all Rambo, they just fly stuff.

Last night I pretty much spent a whole round operating mortars, which entails dialling in coordinates, and not seeing any of the action so to speak. But infantry who called in the mortars would've seen the bodies of our enemies flying in the air when I made a good shot.

Everything is about the bigger picture in this game. You may decide to defend a flag and the enemy may decide not to attack it. In such cases you could spend the whole round just chatting to those in the same squad while you watch all directions for enemies. Your team could win/lose the game without you pulling your trigger.

On the flip side, you could find yourself engaging multiple enemies and their armour and dying lots. Trust me, as a noob, you'll die shed loads.

Used to play a lot of PR. Very good gameplay if you're into more 'serious' gaming (no bunny-hopping teenies)

Btw there's also PR for ArmA 2.

As a big arma fan, this appeals to me. Is it squad based or do you get a lot of like minded folk in-game?

Hit and miss at times I'm afraid. If you find yourself in a squad with a squad leader that's not giving out orders over the VOIP/Mumble, then it's best to leave and join a different squad. (having a mic improves gameplay massively, and using Mumble improves it even further)

On the flip side you can end up in a squad with a squad leader that takes the 'realism' too far, by having you crawl through half a mile of undergrowth to remain undetected.

I do prefer the latter of the extremes though.

On average, you'll end up with a squad leader (there's 6 to a squad btw) that is competent with the controls, i.e how to build stuff, and so you should have an enjoyable round.

Basic understanding is that if you join someone's squad, he is the gaffer and you do as he asks, though the vast majority of squadleaders I've played with are open to suggestions, with many asking for opinions of the squad mates.

Once you've learned the keys for the squad leader commands, there's nowt stopping you being a squad leader.

If I hadn't lost my copy of BF2 years ago, I'd be giving this a try. I remember playing PR ages ago when it was quite a simple weapons mod, but it seems to have grown hugely in size and scope.

If you can't remember your password and you've still got the email address you opened your BF2 account with, then there's nothing stopping you downloading the files, and logging in with your legit account after prompting a password reminder.

Alternatively, you can pick up a new BF2 in the shops for as little as £5

Christ, that would be a memory test!

That's tempting, but I'm tighter than cramp with my money, especially as I know I'v already bought the game in the past, albeit years ago :D

Lol, I suffer from the same memory problems when it comes to passwords, and I have been known to forget my email addresses too.

Anyway, I'm beginning to sound like a recruitment officer for this mod, so I'll bow out and stop bumping this thread. *
