I have had this on GOG for along time now so i thought i get round to playing it.
Made my character with high intelligence and charisma and not too bad with small arms either. Im pretty glad i did as i managed to talk a guy into helping me kill the radscorpians. im a little stuck now as, i can go visit the bandits. me and my companion kill about 5 of them, but we get overwhelmed. I tried talking to the leader but as soon i tell him im a traveller he attacks.Or i can join them, which i dont want to do. Should i come back a bit later, say after i visit vault 15 or is there something else i can do?

If your getting overwhelmed you should probably do a few other quests first. Or fight some monsters for experience points. Once you've increased your skills a bit and maybe got some better gear it will be easier.

Ooft, Fallout. It's been about 10 years since I played it but I do remember that you will definitely need some rope and some Rad-X + RadAway for a huge crater that's vital for progression, so grab some and hold on to it forever. :p

Oh and invest in Energy Weapons too, not much but with each level up put 1/4 of your stat points in it or something, as later on Small Guns are useless especially against the Super Mutants who have Plasma/Rail weapons.

Oh and don't **** with anybody in Power Armor, you can't take it off most of them anyway and this isn't Fallout 3, they will straight up annihilate you with about 1% chance of survival. :p

You 100% should get Fallout 2 if you enjoy this, the mods for it are awesome, they even got some of the voice actors from the base game to help so they could bring out a massive expansion iirc.

My progression is:
1) shady sands, explore, recruit Ian, take everything talk with everyone, get rope
2) vault 15, explore fully find leather jacket/submachine gun
3) junk town, do everything
4) either hub or bandits

God I love this game. Fallout is a game that made me fall in love with RPGs, so much stuff to do, so much freedom, such a fantastic freaking atmosphere...aaaaahh

Just made some excellent progress.
I managed to get the water parts from a place called necropolis, in exchange i repaired the ghouls filtration pumps. I had a 150 days to repair vault 13 water station, but i must have done alright as i repaired it in 98 days left. I didnt even have to go to the necropolis. I could have saved over an hour and got a caravaner to send the parts over to vault 13 but it didnt sound like a good deal, hope i picked right. Anyway thats enough for tonight, ill play some more tomorrow, next stop brotherhood base.

Ok ill start spending some points into energy weapons then.
Yeah im gonna get fallout 2 off gog when i finish this gem. What mods would you recommend for me?

Charisma's really a dump stat in the Fallout games (IIRC in 2 it does affect number of companions in the party). Tagging speech and raising it to ~100% is usually good enough, going past that has very diminishing returns for most skills. What's your character build like (a screenshot of the character page will do)?

Getting the water chip from Necropolis is mandatory, arranging the water caravans from the Hub just extends your deadline a bit.
