Just noticed 1.7 was released last month.

The only mod I have installed on the game is the unofficial community patch.

What would be the best way to install 1.7? Uninstall the patch first and install the newest community patch? Or would I be best off reinstalling the entire game and installing 1.7 + mods on top?

[Edit]
Just noticed a new unofficial patch was also released in August. I'm guessing I should uninstall the older community patch, install v1.7 (official) and then install the newest community patch?

I installed 1.7 when I first got it and had nothing but trouble. It probably crashed 4 or 5 times an hour and made what should've been a fantastic game a complete misery. No idea what it was like pre 1.7 but I wouldn't recommend installing it.

I found that my game was unstable with patch 1.6 (crash every hour or so, not ruling out an underlying system instablity) and very unstable with patch 1.7 (it locks up around every 2-20mins or so, pretty bad so basically you need to quicksave loads).

I thought I'd solved the problem by deleting loads of saved games (I had over 100), but it came back after a while.

I'm sure some people have it running flawlessly but for whatever reason in my experience 1.6 is a lot better than 1.7

Kinda given up with Fallout 3 on the PC, fresh install of a boxed copy and patches made no difference. Have since taken graphical quality down scaling on the chin and bought it for the 360, not a problem in sight... graphical tearing and jaggies however...

i cannot say its flawless for me but im running rather a lot of mods with unoffiicial patch with the game at 1.4 with ALL DLC. I only get bugs with broken steel and parts of Zeta.

I heard this game was like not oblivion in terms of really buggy.

Bastheda cannot code a game for anything even their patches are rubbish dissapointed.

Not had any problems myself with 1.6, but I might hold off on 1.7 if so many people are having problems with it. No harm in giving it a go and reinstalling 1.6 if there are problems I guess.

Unpatched FO3 never crashed on me, then after the patches for broken steel it crashed so often it wasn't worth playing anymore and now on the latest it crashes every couple of hours (more often on best gfx settings).

Pity they can't get it patched properly still love the game though.

Interestingly I just played it vanilla - out of the box. I never installed any mods and just played it straight through - not one crash.

My dad didn't get any crashes out of the box either. From the responses so far it would appear the game started out stable and has got progressively worse with each patch :o

I have this game on steam, but although my computer runs every other game I try fine (Crysis, COD4, Left 4 Dead, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 included) it crashed on this every 20 mins or so. Kind of made the game a bit annoying. Haven't been back on it since. Any suggestions?

I agree with this, unpatched was perfectly stable. All patches have done for me is make it more unstable (though usually playable for hours on my PC without issues atm) and introduce a very irritating delay in VATS mode.

Minus its problems, is it actually a good game? Does it feel like a port from consoles or is it worth a blast? Probably will by a boxed copy if so, as I would expect a download version to be a more recent (and therefore possibly buggy) version.

It's a brilliant game, you should definitely get it one way or another. I'm sure a DL version would be OK, as it's stable for me atm on 1.7 for longer than my normal sitting anyway. Could be hardware related too though.

If you like the idea of a RPG come FPS with incredible depth and many hours of gameplay you'd enjoy it. The setting and atmosphere are very immersive, and it's probably one of the best games I've ever played.

I'm pretty lucky, I've never had a crash in FO3 with any of the patches. Just seems to be luck of the draw though.

To be completley honest the first time I played it I was 50/50 - I didn't know whether I actually liked it. I liked the setting and freedom but didn't like the combat. Then I found the VATS thing and it was a completley different game. Absolutely loved it!

Excellent game, definantly worth playing inspite of the crashes. the impact of crashes can be reduced somewhat by changing your gfx card driver (sometimes to an older one) and turning down the detail a little. There's a huge amount of people with no problems with the game, with all us complaining on here it sounds horrific but I'm on about my 8th play through of the game. I do most games once and never touch them again.
