Ive played through this on the 360 already, and just bought it last week for the PC with the idea of adding the expansions.

Is there any benefit to getting the expansions prior to starting the game or do these only kick in once the original game ends?

Whats the best expansions to have, are there any not necessary or do they all add something?
 
Broken steel is probably the best as it lets you play after you 'finish' the game and adds more levels.
Apart from that I would say none of them are necessary, though if you enjoy the game and want to explore more then add them on later. Going straight into some of the addons from the start would make it quite difficult I would imagine being a low level.

Well its definately worth buying all 5 (Mothership Zeta comes out tomorrow around 10.30am). They all add something new and each gives at least 3-5 hours extra gameplay time. They should allow you to do the DLC quests straight away which would give you the extra weapons/armour you can earn. However, some of the DLC is very tough unless your character is experienced so you may find its not possible to complete the DLC without having first played the main game and got to lvl 20. Thats what I would do then play Broken Steel for the lvl30 cap then do the other 4 DLC in order of release: OP, TP, PL,MZ.

Either way its a lot of great game. Personally I would avoid any mods until you have done all the official DLC as some can cause issues with the main game so be careful about how you use it. Fallout3 also works best if you install to your Windows drive otherwise the DLC needs manual copying and may CTD a lot as it was designed to be installed on the Windows drive as Bethesda did not account for most PC gamers would not have it installed on their Windows drive :rolleyes:

I'm buying the GOTY edition on X360 in October to see how that compared to the PC :D
 
I think they can be added without problem to an existing game save, although id imagine the best situation would be to start a new game after they are added.

As to when they start, that depends on the mod. you will only see the effects of Broken Steel after you get to the end of the game.

The other mods all start out with your character getting a radio signal once the dlc has been downloaded. They can be done at any point of the game, doesn't matter order.

Id recommend Broken Steel definitely, as it extends the level cap and allows play beyond the end of the game.
The other ones are entertaining enough, they usually add new weapons and armor as a reward, slightly overpowered.

You do know they are available for the 360 too, all the official packs?

Thats what initally confused me :p
I thought he bought the pc version to play fan mods, as the official mods are available for the 360 and PC.

My order of preference:

1) Broken Steel (mainly for the level cap increase)
2) Point Lookout (most interesting)
3) Operation Anchorage (nothing more than a FPS add-on but cool loot at the end)
4) The Pitt (when will developers learn? Collect 'em ups are NOT fun)
 
I'd just slap all the DLC on at once, no point waiting. It means it'll open up more options early on plus of course more items/characters etc.

Here's how I'd rate them:

-Broken Steel - must buy for the level cap increase
-Point Lookout - few decent quests, good trading potential
-Operation Anchorage - bland missions in more of a FPS style than normal. At the end though you can get Winterized T51b Power Armour/Helmet which I'm still using now simply because they have high DR and are practically immune to damage
-The Pitt - Didn't really enjoy this one, you get all your gear stolen for a while and it's a bit too "enclosed" relative to the open-ended nature of the main game. You do get to look a truckload of weapons for trading towards the end though.
 
i did all teh side quests then main quest up till you have to go get teh geck from the vault. just did operation anchorage- average but worth doing. just about to start the pitt.
 
I started a new game with the three DLC available at the time. Pitt, Op Anchorage, Broken Steel, and I levelled through the DLC on the highest difficulty setting. A few parts in Pitt were tough, but if you save often and keep stimpaks handy, it's no bother. Though saying that, I suppose it depends on build/play style

Anchorage was totally average, and has a worse ending than the vanilla game, but it's really worth it for the armour at the end. I used the Chinese stealth suit all the way through the rest of the game. You can get better power armour later on in the Pitt, bonus AP etc.

By the end of Broken Steel I was getting sick of it, second playthrough and then all the DLC. I was glad for it to be over. A great game I narrowly avoided ruining with overkill... Point Lookout and Mothership zeta have me thinking about it, though. Would it be possible to re-install the game, and get a level 30 save and throw it in? I know I couldn't start from level 1 again, not without doing myself a mischief.
