I'm currently about 20 hours into Fallout and haven't yet used the Live pannel, but I'd like to maybe get some of the DLC, however I remember that some games with Live, if used after you've started a game, will wipe your save file or move it.

Will this happen with Fallout?

It's been a while but I think so. I did what you're thinking of doing and couldn't access my saves when using Live so I went back to playing without it. I still had access to my saves once I turned Live off/logged out.

You can simply move it. You just need to find your saves file (a .fos file) in "my documents>my games>fallout3" and move it into the folder that has your GFWL username on (this folder should be generated when you log into gfwl within fallout the first time).

Also, I believe you can get the DLC to work offline too. Just buy the DLC with GFWL, login to GFWL in fallout 3 and add them to the game, then close the game, load up FOMM and it will give you the option for it to move the DLC for you for offline use. If you click "yes" then it will move the DLC files so you can play them without the need of GFWL. However, I haven't tested this out yet - so I can't confirm it works.

You are aware the saves are in a subfolder so you just move them right? It doesn't move the saves, it just looks elsewhere.

I didn't put that much thought into it. The whole Live thing seemed like a pain in the arse. I was half way through the game before I even took notice of it.

Thanks for the replies.

On the subject of DLC, do you get any new weapons? And what would your opinions be on the DLC, is there a better one out of the lot?

I've just escaped the Enclave, and I met Fawkes outside, but Dogmeat and Star Paladin Cross aren't anywhere to be found, have they gone for good?

Yes they all contain weapons. If your looking for content you should never pass up on Point Lookout, a nicely sized new area to explore, new enemies, new weapons, quests, perks, etc. Broken Steel is mostly responsible for the raised level cap and some more perks. Anchorage is poor as DLCs go (you can rush through it in about an hour) but you get lots of nice gear at the end of it. Never played The Pitt or Mothership Zeta, i believe Zeta isn't that great though.

Dogmeat goes back to Vault 101. Cross is where you hired her.

Operation Anchorage: Kinda short but is mildly entertaining. They made it too easy however as you come across loads of health regen and ammo replenishment pods.

The biggest advantage is the massive amount of XP you can get. I have read on the Fallout3 wikia that if you do this DLC from level 1 you can be level 7 by the time you are done. However, you also get loads of weapons at the end, plus the best armour in the game. It is the Winterized Power Armour and it never gets damaged.

Broken Steel: This increases the level cap to 30 [from 20] and allows you to continue playing after you have finished the final quest. It also adds some more quests but none are particularly difficult [you are pretty much a beast by the time you have done the main quest! :p]. There are new levels and perks which horribly break the balance of the game. By the time I was 25 absolutely nothing in the game could come close to killing me bar huge numbers. I believe it is this DLC that introduces the Enclave Hellfire Armour. Very strong, but I still prefer the Winterized stuff.

Point Lookout: Kinda boring. It is quite a large new area but the locations are usually huts with a few crap enemies and some stimpaks. Fun if you like killing hillbillies and rednecks. This introduces the double-barrel shotgun, lever-action rifle and microwave emitter gun. There is a questline to follow, but it wasn't all that interesting to me.

Mothership Zeta: A bit of an odd one this, but mildly entertaining. It did get a touch boring just before the end. You get access to a bunch of different alien weapons - a rifle, a pistol and also a drone cannon. There are also a couple of "unique" versions of these too. You can return to the ship once you have finished the quest.

The Pitt: I quite liked this one. It vaguely reminded me of cheesy 80s post-apocalyptic action movies. Though I think they could have made it spectacular if they put more work into it. It had the makings of a great DLC, but it feels rushed in places. I think they were going for the whole morally iffy decision making, but unfortunately most of the big choices aren't that bad.

I am not sure if this one adds any new weapons but there is some unique Power Armour to be had, but only if you choose to kill the boss guy. There is access to an ammo press - it lets you convert one type of ammo to another [conventional bullets only]. Pretty handy if you are lugging around a few hundred rounds of minigun ammo or something you never use.

All in all the DLCs do add to the game, but I feel you should do them before you get much beyond level 10 - otherwise I think they'll all be too easy as I found them.

As for the Games for Windows Live, I was around level 20 before I realised my GWL wasn't logging in. I remedied that and my saves didn't vanish nor did I have to move them elsewhere to continue where I left off. Not sure about what happens when adding DLC, but that shouldn't break your saves - the whole point is to add content, not make you start over.

Did you select Very Easy or something? Entering Point Lookout early on is a recipe for disaster, given that the enemies get bonus damage that drops your health like crazy at lvl20-30 at 85 DR, never mind at low level. The first quest there you would get slaughtered. Anchorage you can do early but it might make things a bit easy in vanilla. Winterised T-51b is broken and has nigh unlimited condition.

DLC breaks lvl20 saves. Or ones that are (i think) at the very end of the final mission, might be past the point of no return or it might be a bit before, don't remember. Either way its best to just start a new game to avoid risking it.

Awesome, thanks for all the info!

I've just finished the game. I decided to go into the room(trying to not spoil it)

Really enjoyed it, though, still think the first two are better.

Playing the game on Normal. And I went to Point Lookout when I was 28/29 or so. So yeah, like I said, nothing can hurt me and I can kill most things in one or two shots. VATs + AP refill perk = everyone is gonna die! :)

I'd like to play through again on Hard using some of the mods, but that'll be a long way off - kinda bored now.

But you are probably correct about Point Lookout, some of the mobs can be quite tough, hard to judge how bad they would be at a lower level.

I managed to get the Game of the Year edition for £15, but I'm a bit lost as to how to play the DLC. I've deleted the Steam version of the game and installed the CD version, also CD2 and I've also moved my saves over to my LIVE folder.
But when I load up any one of my saves I don't get the radio messages or map markers. ANyone able to help?
