I've tried everything in this thread: -

http://steamcommunity.com/app/22370/discussions/0/828935672398031515/

I'm running 64 bit Windows 7 and the intro movie plays for a second or two, sometimes a bit longer then freezes and I have to kill the game via task manager. In summary, for those who can't be bothered to read the above thread (and I don't blame you ;)): -

* Tried compatibility settings on Fallout3.exe, FalloutLauncher.exe and various other things
* Tried installing klite
* Altered .ini file
* Enabled multiple cores
* Tried putting the d3d9.dll into the relevant folder
* Tried unofficial patch
* Disabled GFWL

Anybody got a reliable way of fixing this problem? Or anything else I can try?

Do you have a sound card? That was always what caused me problems with F3, I just ended up disabling it and running on-board sound when I wanted to play it due to Asus' god awful drivers.

Did you mean * Disabled multiple cores?

Edit with notepad:
My Documents\my games\Fallout3\FALLOUT.INI
find (control F) bUseThreadedAI=0
CHANGE to bUseThreadedAI=1
Immediately after this line, ADD this new line:
iNumHWThreads=2

The game doesn't like quad cores.

Disable other programs running? Anti-virus, firewall, hardware monitors, anything with an on screen display like MSI Afterburner etc.

Try moving the default .ini files from My Documents/ My Games/ Fallout 3, and letting the game recreate them.

Verify integrity of game cache in Steam?

Disable Steam Community In Game.

Sorry, yes I made the change you've detailed there. Not disabled anything atm, but I'm loathe to disable firewall.

Yes, verified game cache in Steam.

Got it to the stage now where it did all the way up to and including character creation and naming, but now crashes immediately afterwards. Of course, it's still within some FMV, so I imagine it's still the same issue...

If you have it, open FFDShow and then Do Not Use FFDShow in... and add Fallout 3 (audio and video lists).

Try setting windows sound to stereo if it isn't.

Try running the game in windowed mode.

Checked the ffdshow settings (audio/video) and Fallout3.exe is already there.

Just trying the latest catalysts..

I didn't realise this was going to be so hard. I thought it was a bargain for ~£3, but not if it doesn't run ;)

EDIT: Catalyst 13.4 has made the problem worse! Gets less far than it did before :(

+1 for soundcard issues. I had exactly the same problem when I had my Xonar DX1 (I think it was).

Finally did it, although I've changed/tweaked so many things I have no idea what finally did it. Never remember it all if I reinstall! Thanks for all the suggestions guys and gals :)
