Fallout 3 - Graphics problems

Hi,

Not too sure whether to post this here or the Graphics cards forum.

I'm having some major problems with Fallout 3, the intro movie is corrupted - pieces of graphic stuck on screen, other bits wobbling around. In addition the game crashes so often it's unplayable.

My PC is running XP Professional, AMD 64X 4200 processor, 1GB Ram, and an AGP X1950Pro graphics card, and AC97 onboard sound. So it should be able to run Fallout 3 with few problems.

I've tried the 9.1 and 8.10 ATI drivers, neither of which seem to make much of a difference. The machine has had it's codecs reset so that only the standard XP ones remain.

Has anyone else had this problem? Short of a machine rebuild I've pretty much run out of ideas.

Hi,

I had a few problems with Call of Duty 4 with the sound causing graphics to stop, but updating the audio drivers largely seemed to sort that out. Did get a few instances of corrupted/missing textures though, particularly when targeting a weapon such as the sniper rifle.

Everything else seems to play fine with no problems.

Could be something up with the graphics card maybe, or conflicting drivers?

I have had issues with Fallout mainly ctd than corruption. Tried many fixes eg codecs etc but to no avail. I am running dual boot with xp pro and vista 64 but it still ctd using either operating system.

I have a 4870 512 and the recommended graphic setting is ultra, 1650 X 1080 btw. But I get a lot more ctd with it set that way. Had to drop down to high settings and roll back four driver releases to cat 8.9's to get the game running stable, the latest 9.1 cats caused ctd every few minutes. Also I have since found that adjusting land quality to anything over 100 causes problems on my rig.

Thanks for the advice. I tried using the 8.9 drivers and still get the corruption and CTD happening frequently e.g after ten minutes. I'll try different drivers and more RAM and more patches in the hope that fixes things in the end.

Probably is a great game, but unfortunately one I won't be able to play for the time being anyway.
