As a newbie to RPG-type games, am I better off buying a boxed copy of Fallout 3 rather than getting it on Steam, in order to get the manual? Or is there one included with the Steam download? Or (thirdly) will I be fine without a manual? Thanks!

You'll be fine without a manual - the game takes you by the hand and explains everything in the early stages.

I wouldn't say the game explains everything that's in the manual - a couple of bits are quite useful to know. This should be the download for the manual, but the steam website seems to be dead atm..

This is a useful website, http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_3_Guide
but bear in mind that there are spoilers galore on a lot of pages. If I need to know something I try to avert my eyes from most stuff ;), and I try not to read too much otherwise it feels like I've cheated by knowing something before I should

Well not everything :D.

I have finished the whole game without knowing about quick buttons for weapons ( used pip boy to switch always) and without knowing you could cue up more than 1 shot/slam in the vats at a time :o.
