Fallout 3 problems - no music in main menu, crash on starting new game

I'd like to play Fallout 3 again, but for whatever reason, it no longer works.

I can load the game fine, but when I start a new game, it crashes almost immediately.

I can't remember the last time it worked.

Windows 7 64bit
Rig in sig, latest ATI drivers.
No fallout addons or expansions

Here is what else I've tried:

Verified game cache
Downloaded latest KLite code pack
Run window mode

Any ideas on what to try?

FO3 the glitchiest POS I've ever played.

It's ridiculous that people recommend you to download codec packs and all that naff isn't it? It should just work right? Not with FO3 refer to above comment. My personal recommendation is to not bother, I had countless problems if it was one thing it was another, you fix then you cause another issue. I remember everything working fine for a stint then towards the end of the game constant crashing returned. Try running the game on a single core.

Have you got the latest games for windows live? mine crashed on main menu and when i installed this it works fine now always.Latest ATI drivers too on a 5870.
