Fallout3 is frustrating me to hell! Seems to crash every 5 minutes or so, and that's when I don't get a black screen when it starts up! I've done the Codec reset as reccomended on the F3 website, but even the latest patch locks up!

Any suggestions how to cure this? Is it a problem with my machine, or with the game?

There are loads of things you can try. Look at the forums on Fallout 3 website.

I had loads of problems getting mine to work, still has random crashes.

mine crashes too tried the codec thing but still does it, when it crashes on mine the sound loops and wont stop until i restart or shut down :(

its an awesome game tho so ive decided to put up with it...

Picked F3 up in the sales a few days ago and having the same problems.

Patching, playing with resolutions and textures, effects, AA, AF, HDR and Bloom do naff all. It's ****** =(

Yep, course.

To be honest, there's really no way these crashes can be driver/hardware related. So many people complain of near identical issues (straight CTDs, CTDs resulting in display settings reseting, or total lock-ups) on varying systems and OS' that there simply must be something critically wrong with the game itself. And it's so frustrating, because what I've played of Fallout 3 so far has got me totally enthralled.

There was a nice bug when your in a small room on Quad-core cpus:

Some dual core and quad core CPU users have said that by inserting a new command iNumHWThreads=2 under the General section of Fallout.ini, and setting it to a value of 1, 2 or 4, this prevents freezing at certain points in the game.

It might help.

Its strange really,

I got the game recently and i think im 23Hrs into the game now. I have every setting maxed at 1920 x 1200 and i have had only 2 CTD's that both happened in the same day of playing. And i think i remember having a crash on exit.

Im using the 180.84 drivers

What an awesome game it is though :D

i had crashes constantly, between 10-30mins usually but the occasional one almost instantly on loading, almost gave up.

I did two things, installed the kazaa lite codec pack because I usually just use VLM player which does everything itself and so don't usually install codec's at all. I also ran windowed, those were the two most recommended/talked about fixes, I couldn't tell you which worked but after that I didn't get a single crash at all through the next, no clue, 10-20hours of gameplay, however long it took me to finish basically.

I installed both the normal Kazaa codec pack and the 64bit version which add's a few 64bit codec's. Maybe its using 64bit codec's and 64bit version of the game on compatible systems but very few people have the right codec's installed. I really don't know, but good luck getting it played, pre crashes I couldn't get into the game because I was so pee'd off mostly, after I thought it was close to game of the year.

Mine didn't do it for ages, but it randomly started doing it and over time it steadily got worse

Updated my graphics drivers to the latest WHQL ones and it does it a lot less but it's still not perfect. Different things appear to fix it for different people so I would try all of them lol

I have to disagree with your conclusion as I have had the game since it came out and I have never had a crash (touch wood :) ).

In general, I have heard that overclocking your system can cause problems. How true this is I don't know but if you have overclocked anything you could try setting it back to defaults and try again.

Check the Fallout forums and the alarming amount of crash reports circling the interweb. If you can somehow track down a common cause then please, let us know. There are people unable to start the game, people getting crashes when starting the game, certain conversations or areas locking their computers, and if you were lucky enough to get past those issues, then you can join the OP and myself in enjoying our sporadic CTDs =(

Oh, and no, my system is not overclocked.

i was having checker board crashes but i updated my sapphire 4870 512mb bios and its run like a charm at everything maxed on 1680x1050

Running in windowed mode sorted the crashing issue out for me.

Although I still experience memory leaks as my memory usage increases all the time lasts about 2-3 hours until it gets to 79% and then the frames become unplayable. A quick restart fixes this although I do have kill fallout3.exe in task manager.

I also had a load of problems even went as far as installing codec pack, and even reseting my codecs in the registry, none of this worked. Tried the patch a couple of time, even spent hours playing with resolution and setting, none of which worked till I ran in windowed mode.

Pretty poor, considering the engine is pretty much the same as oblivion, although Clear sky was also based on the stalker engine and that too was pretty unstable.

The other things that I tried that helped me play (wouldn't even load when I first installed).

1) Paste a shortcut of Fallout.exe to desktop, this also bypasses the launcher

2) Kill LIVE cant remember the file name
