I've just installed Fallout 3 for the first time since installing Windows 7 64bit and it just wont load. After installing it i installed the 1.7 patch as well as Broken Steel/Point Lookout mod.

But before it ever gets to the main menu it crashes to desktop with the usual "Fallout 3 has stopped working" message. I tried running it as administrator and it worked a treat. I got to the main menu, altered my key settings and then exited the game (had other stuff to do). However, its now back to not loading again with the same message as before.

Anyone got any ideas? I tried googling but only found forum posts about in game crashing.

Thanks

I'd uninstall it and just install it vanilla (no patches) and check if it works. I've always played it like this. You can then install the addons and see where it stops working.

I dont have a sound card so it's probably not that. I'll try and uninstall and see if works unpatched.

Firstly, did you transfer your save games across?

Did you run it on Vista before, and did you have it running with UAC turned on or off? How have you got it configured for UAC now in Windows 7?

I'm guessing that if you're running as Administrator from the context menu, that you're running with UAC turned on at the moment. I had major problems going from a UAC-enabled installation of Windows Vista with Fallout 3 savegames, into one that had UAC turned off and I'd get the exact same error as you. I couldn't get it to run with the savegames, I had to bite the bullet and reinstall and start over from scratch.
