Fallout - I must be doing it wrong

Just started fallout and am having problems because I keep getting killed over and over.

I've been to Shady Sands (didn't die), searched the neighbouring vault looking for the water chip (didn't die), went into the raider's base to the south of that (got killed repeatedly), went exploring to the north (got killed by radscorpions), went to Junktown (got killed repeatedly).

Now, I'm gonna keep plugging away at this but it's really starting to put me off the game because I'm not being aggressive towards anyone when they decide to attack me.

The final straw tonight was in Junktown where some guy wanted me to get rid of a dog. I walked up to the dog and shot it in the face with a gun and admittedly I kinda expected it to behave like a dog that had been shot in the face and fall over. Instead it mauled me to death before I got another turn.

Not got much of a point other than having a moan but I don't want to reach for a guide right at the start. Have you guys got any tips?

Edit: Aprart from the obvious - Stop getting killed.

Fallout 1?

You're not supposed to go straight for the water chip, avoiding all combat and locations on the way :p

The way I assumed that everyone would play the game would be baldur's gate style... travel to the next area on the map; fully explore it; do all sidequests; move on.

That way you find armour, weapons, magazines, experience, stimpaks, etc.

The game will not stop you from going straight to the hardest areas first... but they will be, er... hard.

Hmmm. I thought the water chip would be a smallish quest to get you started mainly because there's a deadline to complete it.

I do find it odd that you can't walk up to people and say "Hi, I'm looking for a water chip. Any ideas where I could get one?"

Well turns out I was doing it wrong.

Went back to Shady Sands, did the Radscorpion quest. Kicked ass and got a guy to come with me to help out.

Things are looking up. :)

The Junktown dog - get leather jacket (can be found in vault 15). Dogmeat will follow you afterwards!

Fallout is not that hard, but yeah, you have to be nice to people if possible and look for stuff.

That's dogmeat, dogmeat is awesome, dogmeat is your god.

Give him some jerky/food and he will merrily slaughter your enemies and die to protect you, also he doesn't take u pa companion slot iirc so free follower.

Or you can wear the leather jacket (one sleeve) because dogmeat is mel gibsons dog from mad max and that's the jacket mad max wears :p

in Fo2 one of the random encounters (cafe of broken dreams with all the unused/cut characters there moaning :p) there is dogmeat, if you shoot him, mel gibson will appear and shoot you in the face with an smg :D

oh yeah and

Specialise, specialise all the way, don't try and be a master of small arms, big guns and energy weapons, and everything else, pick one and go with that.

Ha ha, reading this makes me want to go back and play it again!

I used to love Fallout 1 and 2 (despite 2's horrendously buggy release)...I still remember the feeling in Fallout 2 when all the contents of the car boot disappeared....gutting.

Everytime I played the first two I always meant to play it a different way and always ended up being a small arms and energy weapons fiend...fun times!

the killaps unoffical patch really fixes fo2 now :p

and on this note a quick poll

new play through fo2.

spec me a role

100% no conflict (well I'll threaten people but never shoot/punch them) won't fire 1 bullet or throw one punch in the whole game everything speech/running away based.

or 100% melee/throwing/unarmed combat based?

or stealthy sticking c4 in peoples pants and stabbing them in the back silently based? (overlaps with the melee based one there)

Cheers for the update link, I did know about it after finding it at NMA, it certainly helped!

Do you know now I think about it I'm not sure I've finished Fallout 2...I certainly remember the ending of Fallout 1 but not two...I remember when I was playing it last I got to...

***spoiler alert***
The oil platform and was fighting the huge guy who ordered the deaths of the (not so) random encounter people at the start...I remember running about with a Gauss rifle but don't remember finishing it...I'll have to go back!
***spoiler end***

I'd vote for a stealth approach as well as I've not seen it done...we demand videos uploaded to Youtube showing your sneak/trouser bombing approach please! :D

It just goes to show how good the older games are...I've got a craving to go back to them and I haven't even finished Fallout 3 yet...come to think of it I've got Fallout New Vegas sat in it's box, I've had it since launch day and haven't installed it yet!

*edit* - hmmm, how do you make the text invisible so you can only read it when it's highlighted?

Good program to record the game and something to edit the video together?

Also will it record the second screen at the same time?

I'm starting to regret the stealth suggestion as i agree i never remember it working well But damn it I'll do it even if it takes enough stealth boys to hide the Chinese army :p - i forgot they;re not in fo2 :p,

But quick question, random encounters run away or fight openly? (will try and get the perks so i move first and have the best position, ie behind them so i can try to sneak)

There may be a lot less talking then normal as i will be assassinating most people :p

Fraps would do the job wouldn't it?

It shouldn't do if the screen is switched off, dunno otherwise *shrugs*.

Flee for the hills!

Quick question for you...have you installed any of the mods that are available for it?

You mentioned killaps for bug fixes, have you tried any of the other biguns such as the restoration project or megamod (both from NMA)?

i use the high res patch i tried the restoration project once but didn't get very far, it did massively change maps etc in a good way but the writing i felt was very amateurish and quite poor/jarring compared to the rest of the game.

Just didn't want you all seeing me watch porn/tv while i played ¬_¬

Cheers for the reply, that's not so good, it's the writing that adds to the atmosphere...think I'll give it a miss then.

I've decided to give it two runs through in different ways...the most violent way possible to begin with becoming an expert with big weapons and again as you talked about, using charm and intelligence to solve problems rather than blasting everything, I've never tried it that way before so it should be a wheeze!

Yeah...guessed as much. ;)

100p the high res patch lets you run it in 16 bit colour so it doesnt mess u pthe game/second screen :p
