(OLD POST)

Hi, ive just bought new vegas and im getting really bad fps problems on Ultra and high (medium is fine) in 70% of areas.

This is my spec

Amd phenom 2 x4 955 3.2 overclocked to 3.8Ghz
4Gb of ddr3 RAM
sapphire 5870 (playing at 1920x1200)
w7 64bit

The main problem i have is in gun fights. The fps drops to around 11Fps (fraps).
Roaming around it stays around 45 but often drops to 28-32fps for no reason.

Now ive been having a few problems with other games like WoW.
I used to play wow with two monitors. The first monitor for wow and the second to watch DVD's etc. In the last month I cant seem to do this anymore. The fps in wow drops from 60 to 22 where it used to only drop 5-6 fps while playing dvds in the background.

Ive also played a demo recently called Gothic 4 and the fps was more like a slide show.

Now i know the 5870 isnt the best card out there, but im pretty sure it should be getting better fps in fallout vegas on high at least. Ive seen people on here saying they get a good constant 60fps using the same processor and a 5850 on High.

Any one else getting this problem??

N.B
While typeing this, Something that hadnt occured to me is the Overclock. Im going to go set the cpu back to default see if that helps wow and Fallout vegas!

Not sure why you're getting problems with Vegas, I do know others are having issues too. Some games don't perform well on ATI/AMD cards with AA on.

Has WoW recently had an update in prep for the expansion? If so this might affect it, as I hear the expansion is more of a system hog.

Just ideas.

True (about the wow expansion) Never thought of that really.

Just underclocked and the fps is the same -_- grr. Ill try it with AA off amd/or hope for an update!

And on lower specs it works perfectly. The OP's spec is better than mine by a fair margin, i only have a 4850 and e6850 C2D OC'd and it never drops below 40fps with all settings maxed.

It's weird seeing all these people with high spec systems struggling in NV when mine that was mid range even 2 or 3 years ago plays it flawlessly.

Same with sims 3! I have tryed sims 3 on 4-5 diff high end systems and none of them ran it smoothly on any settings.... Lol my mums dell laptop she bought from ASDA in a cheap sale... runs it smoothly on medium settings! -_- Madness

When was the last time you updated your graphics card drivers?

Maybe a defrag is in order too, and personally I would run a full scandisk overnight maybe.

Have you checked the temp of your Graphics card?

It may have a dodgy fan, and maybe your card is clever enough to reduce the performance of the card if your temps are too high.

Yep tryed all that :(

I allways defrag when it comes to installing new high spec games,
gpu was getting to around 52c max and ill run the scandisk tonight :D

Also i didnt know NV used dx 11... no wonder it sucked then lol only ever had one game that used dx11 that ran that good tbh (dirt 2) all the rest had the FPS raped by having it on. Ill see if i can turn it off :D

tbh ive NO idea how to install an earlier version of dx9...yet :P lol Ill take a look in the morning see how i can fix it! Im getting bloody sick of all these games coming out.. and not running properly! In the last 2 years i have spent well over £150 on games that dont work that well on high end pcs/run at all! Im seriously thinking of not upgrading my pc anymore. Then when the last game comes out that my gpu can run jack it all in -_-

NB solved :D read O.P
