So i've bought the fallout games, Fallout 3 and new vegas on Steam, Ive honestly never got around to playing them...ive looked into fallout 1 and 2. Is it worth going that far back and playing those, It doesn't look that great, but i guess graphics dont always make a game a good game. But is it a massive impact on the story to fallout 3 and new vegas?

From memory (I played 1 and 2 years ago) there is no link beyond the setting. If there IS a link it didn't affect me when I came to play Fallout 3.

1 and 2 were great games in their day and I'm glad I played them when they were current. I'm not sure I'd be able to get into them now.

It depends on what sort of game you like, because presentation- and gameplay wise the first two differ wildly from the later ones.

I can only go by personal experience, of course, but I started playing F1 and F2 but quickly lost interest, because to my way of thinking those games dragged. Now, I understand that most other people see this differently, but perhaps it's just not my kind of game because I thought they were a sort of science fiction version of Baldur's Gate and/or Jagged Alliance 1 and 2, with which I had the same problems. So basically, if you like the isometric story-driven finicky group management games, you'll probably like F1 and F2, but if not, it's a fair bet you won't like these two.

F3 and FNW are a different sort of game altogether, and I greatly enjoyed both of them; in fact I still play them now and again. At no time did I feel that I was missing out on any part of the story of F1 and F2, so you're all right there. Basically they're very Elder Scrolls like, especially Oblivion and Skyrim, so if you like those you'll most certainly like F3 and FNV. Well, it's all Bethesda, and I enjoy the hell out of most Bethesda games anyway.

It's quite possible that your personal preference could lead you to enjoy the first two games and dislike the later ones.

They were worth it when they were part of GOG's catalogue, trouble is they were a victim of their own success, as soon as the games appeared on steam GOG stopped selling them.
(though those of us who purchased early keep the games in our gog library)

Older games like that I'm more likely to play on a laptop when away from home, so I prefer GOG's DRM-free approach with the installer

if you can look beyond the eye candy (or lack of) worth a throw

I'd never played the first two and I certainly don't feel that it diminished my experience in Fallout 3. I'd just jump right in and play that to be honest :) I'm playing it through again and nothing can beat the atmosphere of raiding some old ruined building whilst listening to Three Dog banging out those old tunes. It truly is an immersive and surreal experience.

Exactly this. I was raised on Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, Arcanum, etc. but never played Fallout 1 or 2, so picked them up on CD recently. Finicky is definitely the right word - if you're not used to 90's style animated interfaces etc. then these games will be a shock.

P.S. to get Fallout (1) working on new systems I recommend Fixt http://falloutmods.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_FIXT

Thanks for the input guys, I guess ill start with FO3 and new vegas instead :) I have enough games on my plate to squeeze in whilst i have time before uni starts! :P

I've never played a fallout game, and due to a lack of free time I only intend on starting with Fallout 4. Would have liked to have begun with Fallout 3 as you plan to OP, but maybe sometime in the future :)

Play Fallout 3 first. It's immense and massively enjoyable - lots of exploring to do if you're into that kind of thing and you can, literally, go anywhere and do what you want.

I was disappointed with Fallout NV - just didn't get on with it but see how you go - I definitely would put Fallout 3 above it.

I loved Fallout 3, but found I became too powerfull too quickly. But the expansions just lost me (the Korean one stopped me playing the game).

I've got New Vegas but haven't started it yet. My experience with the F3 expansions has poisoned it for me...

Fallout 3 I loved and put some serious hours in to 100% everything.

New Vegas however I just couldn't get into it and gave it up after 2 hours.

I couldn't put my finger on what it was about NV, but I probably only got through about 50% of it. Fallout 3 was a game I completed and went back to replay some of the different alternate story lines.

I think it was the story for me in Fallout 3. It was a very claustrophobic game and this made everything better. I didn't mind the expansions - they were okay but didn't really add massively to the game.

NV right from the get go I just couldn't get on with it - not sure why it was just missing something.

Loved Fallout 3 and the expansions. Never did get around to completing it because the damn thing kept performing a CTD on me ( I believe the issue was common and has been fixed now).

I picked up NV the moment it came out.....but never got around to it. The general consense I believe is that its a great game but if its better or not than FO3 seems to differ from person to person.

I played the original FO1 and FO2 years ago. For the life of me I cant remember the storyline but I believe they are all similar (you leave/escape from your vault to either save it or set your own path). You dont really need to play them to enjoy the latters.

Really looking forward to FO4, this is a no brainer for me.

NV is more in tune with 1&2, 3 is more on it's own to a degree (but they are very much all related). I'd recommend starting at FO3 (maybe a texture mod or two?) and go from there as it's likely the closest to 4 in terms of story / east coast location (3 is washington DC, 4 is boston).

Fo1 and Fo1 are incredible games, totally need to be on every gamers list to play. Fallout 3 is great, but 1 and 2 blow it out the water, fantastic games.

Fallout 2 sits in my top 5, along side Red Alert 2, Baldurs Gate 2, Total Annihilation (the other spot in the top 5 gets taken up with various games ...!).

You don't need to play them, as all the fallout games are standalone, but you gain a lot of insight into the history of everything and the lore and such if you were to play Fallout 1 and 2 i.e. why there are super mutants, who the Brotherhood of steel are, who the Enclave are, the rise of the NCR etc.

Same - I still play NV occasionally and still haven't completed the main storyline after a few years.

FO3 is awesome!
