With the traits like strength and intelligence, you don't put these up yourself when your level up? Are these put up automatically when you level up.

I know about levelling up the skills like small guns and big guns.

Your SPECIAL (strength perception etc) stats don't change as you level unless you choose certain perks ( like perception + 1 etc but think they only in FO2) or if you find certain places/events that level them for you (won't spoil how) but mostly they stay the same or rise by 1 throughout the game.
