Chaps,

It's been a few years since I was last active in the motors forum, and much like many other areas of the forums of late, I'm feeling rather out of touch. It feels a little rude jumping straight in with a request but I'm starting to run out of time so forgive me.

Having lived in London for the past 14 years or so, I've not owned a car since moving here, relying on rentals for longer journeys, so my experience with cars has become quite limited. Now however, with a change in circumstances (baby on the way) and needing to visit relatives much more frequently (who are both around 2hours a way) and needing to be able to just go as/when the time has come to purchase a car rather than rely on zipcar/virtuo.

Where I'm hoping you guys can come in is with helping to narrow down the choice of car - because I'm having a pretty hard time not ending up with 20 different options. I'm not overly fussy, but I'm hoping for something that's pretty decent, not terrible looking and ultimately is smooth/comfortable.

Criteria:
- Has to be an auto - I've driven a few different cars recently, I've found the VW DSG comfortable to drive (in the 2019 Golf), as I also have when driving a couple of Mercedes auto based cars (notably a few different 2019/2020 A180s), that's been smooth as butter to me but then I haven't experienced many others
- Ideally no older than 2018/2019
- Petrol
- Family friendly - so four doors with decent boot space
- Budget is up to £20k - not looking to PCP/HP, I just fancy buying something and owning it long term. I really don't want to stretch it further than that as I've a few other large expenditures creeping in.

The obvious option for me so far has simply been to get something like a 2018/2019 Golf. Am I missing any blindingly obvious cars? Should i be looking at something completely different? Should I be avoiding any particular brands? I'm not averse to looking at larger vehicles either, I just want something solidly built and reliable. If I should be looking at an older vehicle, I'm willing to consider that, part of me just thinks newer = less likely to have as many problems.

As is clear, I'm clueless so any assistance would be gratefully received.

Mike.

Just throwing it out there as an option but despite my previous comments about the Qashqai the 2018 facelift 1.3 DCT with the Tekna or Tekna+ pack is actually not a bad vehicle and comes in around the 20K price point for used low mileage.

Skoda Superb IMO. The Octavia boot will soon get annoying - I had a similar use case, family 2 hrs away - my XE boot became a real bottle neck in the early days especially when you are carrying the moses basket as well as the pram.

Can't comment on the engine but 150ps doesn't seem too underpowered.

Focus estate would be a nice shout - it's only a 1.0 (125hp) but packs a punch and they have a lovely smooth 6 or 8-speed torque converter auto (depending on generation) so nice to drive too. Had it with 4 adults holding 70mph up the inclines of the M62 without issue, so power shouldn't feel an issue.

that budget should be enough to get a decent 2017/2018 f36 430i Gran Coupe? People will complain about the interior quality (which is fair against the new shape 3 series, but against a Golf it's certainly not worse..). Great boot space and the best auto gearbox you can get.

spent literally 20 seconds looking and this is an example, sure you can find others!

Octavia or Leon would be worth investigating. I was in the same position as you and went with a Leon. It was quickly too small though so ended up changing to an estate (v60, probably out of budget these days though).

Skoda Octavia, potentially a VRS?
Skoda Superb, Sportline or Sportline Plus?
A6 Avant - though probably much higher mileage than the Skodas.

Interesting take, as whilst the Superb is obviously a bit bigger, it's not like the Octavia boot is particularly small - they're both MQB platform cars.

On paper, for the hatchbacks at least, you're looking at something like 600L vs 625L.

Fair - I was basing it on the assumption it would be similar to my Jag XE versus Jag XF. It "just small enough" in every way to make pram, moses, luggage, toys etc. a bridge too far.

I went off Skoda with the 1.8 TSI engine in my L & K.
Wasn’t a patch on the 20 valve turbo in my MK1 VRS.
I find it hard to recommend them anymore after that experience.

Hmm. Assuming it’s the same engine that’s in my polo I’ve not experienced high oil consumption. Mpg is lower than reported especially around town, although I did manage 40+ on a long trip to Chester and back. I wasn’t driving like miss daisy either.

Google 1.8 TSI oil consumption.
Those that are affected have it bad.
Some have even had new engines under warranty (Audi)
