Hi

After my recent issues with my Alfa 147 (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17844870), I've decided that once it's fixed, I'm getting shot.

I could do with something a bit bigger now we have our daughter, and need something that is going to get me to work & back reliably. It's fair to say I've fallen out of love with my Alfa

So, after selling the 147, and paying off what it's costing to fix it, I should have around £4k to play with and am looking at a decent sized saloon car.

Clearly, I don't want a BMW, Audi or VW as for that kind of money you get nothing and I still want something that looks respectable & goes reasonably well.

I was looking at the mk1 Octavia VRS & was surprised to find them in the price range. Any other suggestions or anything I really need to know about the Octy before starting to seriously look would be much appreciated :)

although after recommending a mondeo i had saved up £7k for a car but intent on spending as little as possible.

Test drove a few mondeo mk3 ghia x's and the interior was not that good quality wise, esp noticaibly coming straight from a "luxury" car

In the end i norrowed my search down to 4 cars.

E39 528/530se
Audi A6
Lexus GS300
Volvo S80 2.9se

The Audi was struck off the list straight away as my old man bought a brand new one. I couldent find a GS300 in the local area with leather so this was struck off.

This left me with the volvo and the beemer, the beemer was the beter car completly trouncing the volvo in the twisties. But when it came to money a decent BMW was twice the price of the volvo in matching spec so i went for the volvo and havent regretted it, so far.

Edit, is a pretty boring car to drive though, slighty better than a passat imho but nowhere near as good as my old mk2 mondeo :(

147 to a Mondeo or Octavia.

Reminds me when I convinced myself to replace my last 156 with a Primera. I hated driving every minute of it and tried to convince myself a car was an A to B item.

Needless to say I now have another 156 less than 16 months after selling my other one.

If you think a Ford Mondeo is boring, a Skoda Octavia must be equally boring if not more so. Square looking, dated, and nasty inside.

How someone can move from an Alfa Romeo to a Mk1 Skoda is beyond me.

Easy you give up drinking and smoking, have 2.2 kids, a 3 bed semi and get a labrador. Remember sex takes place in the missionary position at 10.15pm every Friday night.

Has to be the Octy vRS for 4K surely. Thats how much mine was. Lots of space, big boot, good economy, reliable, half leather, climate control etc... and 180bhp (or 210+ remapped).

a VRS? it'll be a dog for 4k
you won't get more car for your money than a mk3 mondy, and they aren't boring, get a TDCi 130, 0-60 is still about 9 seconds but the torque on them is addictive, they handle pretty good too, then there's the kit, on a ghia X (in your price range), you'll get cruise, heated leather, sony 6cd changer, climate and much more that i cannot remember.

oh, i forgot, you don't like oil burners

Seat Toledo V5 - I bought a 2001 model 6 or so months ago for just shy of 4k. They are well equipped (Sat Nav, Electric everything, climate control, etc.) and at 170bhp its no slouch either. Reliability is good also as its just a Bora/Golf/Audi A3/Octavia in a flamenco dress.

There's quite a few around that price range, 2001-2002 models. Have a shufty on Pistonheads, like I said I thought what you said initially but they don;t look shabby.

I just don;t know if I could bring myself to drive a Mondeo (or a Skoda for that matter..... ;)) :(

Well, the good thing is you'll have a opportunity to do all the bits associated with the cambelt change including the idlers, tensioners and the water pump. At least that way you know its been done.
