fan connector help

I have a fan which im looking to replace, problem is its a 3 pin fan, but the board only has a 2pin connector. If i rewire the the 3 pin fan, using the existing fan's 2 pin connector, will this work?
Just out of interest, im replacing the fan in my new dvd recorder to lower noise levels

I've never heard of a two pin connector on a motherboard, what's your motherboard?. I've only seen these inside Power Supplies.
