Fan control idea

Sorry Teal I was asking Jon for the pics hehe

Good stuff though, shame the steel buckeled but I think the Acrylic looks better anyway. Good move not putting more leds on, that would have spoilt it imo.

I can probably manage photos over the weekend if you don't mind them being from a phone. I'm not sure they'll be terribly instructional.

Initially I was going to just mount the switches in a drilled and filed strip of 2mm steel I cut out of an old blue lockable box we'd had in the cupboard since 1994. Unfortunately the drill caused the material to bend and buckle.

I'm a bit confused by this, 2mm steel shouldn't deform dramatically when drilled. My best guess is that you tried to drill large holes in one go, rather than starting with say a 3mm drill, then 5mm and so on. I'm not sure how you clamped it either, but putting a thin piece of wood underneath before drilling should also avoid it buckling. :(

That's the thing. I have no workshop, no drill press or anything fancy.

I clamped the metal down on a block of wood but it was clamped only on one side. I drilled in an increasing size from small to large but despite this it still bent. Maybe it wasn't quite 2mm thick stock. The resulting hole needed to be 20mm and it started going bendy around the 15mm area.

Nesteq FanMax 8-Channel google one of those

u can turn off a bank off 4 fans at a time ( 2 banks of 4)
it does have leds but they dont blind you and look pretty. they do turn off when the fans are turned off or no fan is connected

im sure they dont meet all your criteria but none seem to so far

Nesteq FanMax 8-Channel
I did consider that but as you say you can't turn off individual channels, it's 4 at a time.

Just to clear up any confution. I've decided on the Lamptron FC8 and toggle switches which have just arrived.

Need to get the FC8, hopefully OcUK will stock it, some short fan wires, (probably these and just cut the second fan wire off) and some fans.

Thanks All. :)

Teal, where did you get that 6mm Acrylic from? I'm thinking it'll be perfect to mount the switches too, then I can mount the Acrylic to the blanking plate. Only the dollys will be poking through the blanking plate then which I think will look better than bolting them directly to it.

Got it off eBay John. I got an A4 sized chunk of it.

Search for 'acrylic 6mm a4'

The original chunk was 3mm though and a spare bit I had from a previous project where I blocked a fan hole.

There was a plastic company that would do cut to size chunks of it but they had a minimum order value of £10 and for some reason I begrudged paying £10 for £1.50 of material.

Check out the sunbeam rheobus, it has knobs which turn down and then physically switch, as in they actually click, to turn off. You can also mod it quite easily like i did with mine: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7882878/Selling/resized lian/P1000435.JPG

You could easily remove the led's too. And depending on how important 8 channels are, even though it's 4 channels it has 20w per channel to power lots of fans.

Cheers Teal, that's a lot cheaper than I imagined, aside from the pre-cut ;)

That's the way to do it! I'd need two of those though and it lacks the flexibility of the switch/controller combo.

Buy dimmer switches, like to control a living room light. Those are basically the same this they lower the current then switch off completely.

Ive seen them for as little as £3 on the internet.
