Looking to buy 3 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FG-030-SY and need a fan controller to keep them quiet when I'm not gaming.

I was thinking of getting the 1150rpm but the 1850rpm's seem popular and it's nice to have the power there when it's needed. Seems to be the same fan? So at 1150rpm it should sound the same if not quieter since they charge an extra £4 for it.

Anyone recommend an easy to use fan controller? My case has an almost flush mounted door so it needs to be touch screen or at least be very flat. Case is the Coolermaster Silencio. :)

Thank you Tealc, that looks like a great controller will have a look at some reviews tonight.

That's true about undervolting, hrm...500rpm means the fans would shift as much air as the heat in my case would lol. I'd only turn them down to say 1000rpm do you think that would work alright?

Maybe I'll go for the 1450 rpms, would be good to hear from someone on here who has some of the Scythes. Just looking to keep my case a bit cooler, at the moment the exhaust does less than nothing. Got a 7970 coming tomorrow want to make sure it's getting enough air, even though it will run cooler than my 4890 lol.

Long thread about it on here, look's really good I think I'll get one.

1000rpm would be fine for pretty much any fan. If I were buying a fan I'd never buy a 1850rpm fan as it would be far too noisy for my liking. 1500rpm is really the most I'd consider. Anything more is a waste as I'd not use it and I'd just waste energy slowing it down to sub 1000rpm.

The Recon does look nice and I'm very much looking forward to looking at it.

What fans did you ask for Shashman? I asked for a 140 and a 120 black PWM but I don't know if I will get them as they don't seem to be available to buy, but they are in their website.

So they just send you free stuff to review? Sounds good, sign me up.

I will wait then. Will consider the 1450's too. :) Or I could get the 1150s and not bother with a controller. Watching videos though, the 1850 at full speed doesn't seem to make too much noise, certainly not too much for headphone use anyway. I get what you mean though, it's a hassle to keep changing fan speeds.

Lol no BrianB, there was a 'competition' on here to review the BitFenix Recon and Hydra, and Tealc and me were the lucky winners of the Recon + 2 Spectre Pro fans to review :)

I asked for 1 x 120mm and 1 x 140mm white LED Spectre Pro.

The Recon has an auto setting by the way. In fact it's very programmable from what I've read about it so far.

You know sometimes I wonder how peoplecan ever consider running something like this anywhere near 12v. I know noise diminishes with distance but surely that would be audible in the next room at 12v.

I discovered years ago that there's no need to have a noisy PC and certainly not one that you need to justify wearing headphones. Mind you my PC resides in the living room so I have to be considerate to the wife, so I have more of an excuse. :)

If I were you, and you thought like me, then I'd buy the 1150rpm, possibly the 1450rpm at a pinch and control them either through a fan controller or PWM via an adaptor such as the one I'm developing http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18421145

It was the Auto setting that got my interest in the Recon. I'm not sure how much it integrates with the PC yet though. I know you can adjust fans by mobile device anywhere in the world which is a great feature if you are away from your PC and it gets hot.

No it's not audible :p I have mine set at 1100 for idle but during gaming I ramp it upto 1500 but I wear headphones, as long as the temps are reasonably cool then there is always some compromise that has to be made with noise. The AP15's are good, but at full running speed 1800 unless your PC is in another room they are audible, I'd personally go for a lower speed fan unless you have a controller of some kind.

It has a temperature probe which I presume you place in the most likely 'problem' area and is connected to the Recon. Probably somewhere between gfx and cpu in the case. You then set your maximum desirable temp. and when it hits that temperature, it sets the fans rpm at a pre-programmed level.

Thanks for your replies guys, I think I'll get the 1850's with a controller after I read your reviews. At night I can put the fans up and wear headphones, during the day I could run them at a lower speed.

Look forward to your reviews. :p

Got my 7970 running nicely :) unfortunately it gets to like 81c in this case when overclocked.

Looking for the new fans now, the 1850s are my first choice with a controller, but the Corsair SP120's look very intriguing...they not only look good but seem to perform well too, and get get a twin pack for £20...rather stay with overclockers though so I'm going to try find a review that says the corsairs are pants. Anyone here used the Corsairs?

Looks interesting that Xigmatech, I need to find some reviews, and I don't trust that it will actually fit in my cases 120mm fan mounts...I need 3 fans, 2 as intake and 1 exhaust, but there isnt a lot of space on my case at the back.

Looks like you are stuck, as I am, with 120mm fans, certainly on the back slot and possibly on the front slots too.

Ah well not the end of the world lol. Would have been nice as 14's move a lot of air. Cheers.

That Xigmatek fan is 140mm but can be fitted to 120mm emplacements. That's one of its main selling points.

I don't trust it, really doesn't look like they would be able to fit in the space where 2 120mm fans would sit almost touching eachother. Doesn't seem like my case has clearance either...fan did look great in video review though.

Oh god xD switched my only fan with some CFM to the back for exhaust, now my gpu instead of idling at 35-40 now idles at 60! Literally no airflow in my case, if I take the side panel off it drops.

Can anyone think of a bad reason not to buy the following?

  • Corsair AF120 Air Series 120mm High Airflow Fan - Twin Pack
  • Corsair SP120 Quiet Edition 120mm Case Fan (for hard drive cage, high pressure seems to make more sense than straight up airflow?)
  • BitFenix Recon Internet-Connected Fan Controller or NZXT mesh 5 channel controller

Otherwise I'm looking at 3 1850 Scythe GTs.

Want to order asap. :)
