Fan controller, noise?

So I wrote about this in a previous thread, and I have no clue what is going on.

Few weeks ago I placed 3 Corsair Silence Edition(2x 120mm, 1x 140mm) in my NZXT Phantom, plugged them into the built in fan controller, and it made a hideous noise! I then tried to plug them onto the motherboard, and that noise was gone or reduced a lot. I thought this was a problem with the Corsairs, so I returned them and bought a NZXT fan to test.

Once again, I installed the fan, a 140mm for the front, plugged it to the built in fan controller, and again the noise is there... I plug it on the motherboard, and the noise is gone again. What is the cause of this? It has to be something with the power output from the fan controller?

So that's fine, but I would really like to be able to controle the fan on the motherboard, is that possible when it's a 3 PIN?

Probably PWM issue. Hard to say though when you don't describe the noise.

Probably. PWM is a rapid series of on and off voltage bursts that if they don't occur fast enough can cause the fan to emit a growling noise.

Something like this http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18421145 will convert the PWM output from your motherboard to a straight voltage for 3 pin fans.

Or have your BIOS/fan monitoring software to control using voltage control rather than PWM. Not all motherboards support it though. eg My Gigabyte only has PWM/Voltage control on one header.

Or buy a proper fan controller.

Or return your case as faulty.

Well, the other fans are not PWN, they're also 3 pin. The 220mm fan at the top is making a similar noise, but not quite as noticeable. The sound is a like a buzz, hard to describe.

I did try to adjust the fan in BIOS, but even if I choose disable, it still run full RPM.. In BIOS, it show the CPU Fan, and then the 1st/2nd/3rd fan, so it should be supported on all 4 of them, maybe it's only PWM?

No I mean maybe the case's fan controller uses PWM as it's regulation methos which it then feeds into the 3 pin fans.

As I said sometimes only the one motherboard header supports any form of control, either it being PWM or Voltage.

You could also use a PWM splitter and PWM converter as linked above.

Still thinking a proper fan controller might be the better option for you, or return the case as it's clearly not doing it's job properly.

Yea, I'm currently looking into a fan controller, the problem is just that NZXT Phantom has a door, so it'd have to be touch screen, which im not a fan of.

I think I'll return the fan, since, I am looking to build/mod another case and then just move my stuff there.
