Hi there,
I've just bought an akasa fan controller. It has probes for temperature readings which are never going to get an accurate read. It has one which is labelled for the CPU, yet surely to get that reading you would have to put it on the thermal paste on the CPU ( Not happening ).

Are there any ways to get a good temp reading for CPU and GPU to these fan controllers?

Just point it at the bottom of the heatsink, as close to the source as you can really, depends on the cooler design. You'll get a 'proxy-ish' reading, but in all honesty you're not going to do much better than that. Messing around and trying to get it on the die itself will just frak up your cooling more often then not. Also, some might suggest getting it under the chip between the pins, however to me that sounds rather doltish, not to mention in all likelihood inefficient.


No way you're getting the actual 'core' temperature with one of them probes, as you rightfully suspect.

I have a h-50 cooler, so seems i'm not going to get any kind of reading at all ( it's a sealed unit over the CPU, it's just not going to happen ). I'm surprised there isn't a header on the motherboard to give the info... or a device you can get to do that.

It's a shame, but I just don't think i'm going to connect any of my thermometers,.. they seem a bit useless. SpeedFan can do that for me I guess.
 
As far as I can tell, the copper area at the base of the H-50 waterblock is slightly larger than the actual die due to its 'rounded' shape, if you could stick the probe on/near the protruding copper base, (assuming access and sufficient space) it would be the perfect place for just such a probe to be.

Note however that I've no experience with this particular cooler and don't know whether it's feasible/practical, just a thought.

I don't think it's actually possible to do that, because that whole unit you see there goes into a bracked like thing, and then to install, is twisted round so them latches you can see ( look just like bits on the side )... line up with the bottom of the bracket. To get a thermometer in there I think would be near impossible. Looking at the temp probes now on the fan controller, they have like a plastic coating around them, which may actually mean putting them anywhere near the processor is a bad idea.

Thanks for the help, it's a shame it won't work but... I guess it's not essential.

Also, notice you're in Nottingham, I'm at uni there now.... do you know of any good computer shops around here?
